I think its interesting--and maybe a bit telling--that Apple really marketed a case for the iPhone for the first time with this one. If the thinking is that everyone puts a case on it anyway and we should be making cases too, then wouldn't it be easier just to make the darn thing out of something other than GLASS?

Maybe they knew about the problem, but the bun was already in the oven, so they needed a quick fix....

That's an interesting choice of words. Usually preventing a bun from getting in the oven means using a, uh, "case" beforehand.

I think Apple may come out with a mid-cycle replacement, and I can't wait for the ululating masses screaming for free phones, rebates, exchanges, etc.

Yeah, kind of Xbox 360esque, though hopefully they don't let it go so long that someone comes up with a clever name for the defect.

WSJ (and others) are reporting that Microsoft CEO Kevin Turner gloated “It looks like the iPhone 4 might be their Vista”.

"Apple's Vista"? Way to burn your competition - by comparing their failure to your own.

Interesting, yes, I thought about exactly the same thing the second I heard about the antenna issue. And that was before I received mine in the mail!

Pretty ridiculous, that. A bit like the Soviet Union noting when a US grain harvest was down. Yeah, down from feeding our whole country!

It does sound though like the problem may be a bit more significant than first thought and Apple's response (so far) is a bit underwhelming. They're not learning from history.

*IF* (clearly, that's a big if...) Apple knew about this and went ahead, anyway, that bit of news (should it turn out to be true) will be more damning than the technical problem itself -- making an honest mistake is one thing, knowing about an error in design and blowing it off as they did initially is quite something else altogether. Perhaps we'll learn more at tomorrow's press conference (10AM Pacific, according to Engadget).

    also of note:

I don't know if you reference to them knowing is a reference to that bloomberg blip earlier today, but yeah, that would make life more difficult. Also, Whoopi had an iPhone 4 rant on TV recently. That type of coverage isn't the sort of thing you need even if your buyers are notoriously loyal. Especially if you're branding strategy is "it just works".
