    Default Officially unlocking the iPhone?

I was pretty sure that the federal government had REQUIRED US carriers to unlock ALL cellphones once contracts were fulfilled. That should mean that ATT would begin unlocking 1st generation iPhones around now. I realize that this isn't a huge bonanza, given that the new iPhones are better in most ways; but I still thought that there would be a modest surge of officially unlocked iPhones on the market. Anyone know any more about this?

Can you provide a link or reference for more info about this federal requirement? I haven't heard of it.

I heard of that lawsuit, but I don't remember what the verdict was. I doubt Apple would let you unlock it anyway, just like they don't like jailbreaking the least bit, especially since almost very unlock method I've seen requires a jailbreak.
    Past and current devices: Palm m505 (Sold) > Palm Zire 71 (nonfunctional working) > Tapwave Zodiac 1 (nonfunctional) > Palm Tungsten T5 (nonfunctional tenatively functioning) + SE w300i + 2GB SanDisk SD + Cheap $5 keyboard (that works…)(sold) > Cingular 8125 (retired) + 2GB MicroSD in adapter > Nokia N800 + 4GB SDHC + 8125's 2GB MicroSD in adapter + Palm M505

I haven't the time to find it at the moment; but as to PG's post, it's not about what Apple likes. If it's the law, they would have to abide by it; and frankly as I said above, I doubt that they would feel THAT threatened by a 2 generation old iPhone; and going forward the same would probably apply. Who knows what the iphone is going to be like 2 gens. from now?
