Re: 3.0 OS Update
You know, it just breaks my heart when someone gives up on Apple. Their product quality is better than most, but sometimes you get a lemon. I've been drinking that Kool-Aid for 15 years and I can't remember..... Nope, I can't remember an Apple product really ever failing.
Wait. I lie. My old white iBook bit the dust with a known logic board failure. But that only took care of the problem of what to do with it after I replaced it: I was due for an upgrade anyway.
I have a first gen iPhone which I have been diligently updating from 1.whatever to 3.0. I fully expect it to survive until January when I'll be upgrading to the 3GS. Or the 3GT. Or whatever's out by then.

Re: 3.0 OS Update
yeah, so sorry for your ordeal namerif, like brickman65 said, a total complete failure lemon is unusual but ...
crap does happen, I'm like a total fanboy, I admit it, but I'll certainly tell the truth, I've had a mishap or two myself, so far not on the iphone, but I always buy the extended warrant on our laptops and crap does happen

Re: 3.0 OS Update
Wasn't there a previous discussion about your wife and her Apple products, beryl? Somehow I remember discussing how a BHer's wife always had difficulties while he didn't.
My white iBook was well over 2 years old when it bit the dust. More like 5. It was a G3 and Leopard was coming out & G3's were not supported so I wanted to upgrade. I usually keep my equipment until I can't use the latest OS on it (which is why I was overjoyed when iPhone OS 3 was good to go on the 1st gen iPhone!), but this iBook was still going strong and I was scratching my head RE: how to get rid of it with dignity (I really like Apple products.). But then the video went out and my problem was solved.
This has happened to me more than once in my life. The first time was when I was contemplating what to do with my 1980 Chevette when I moved to IL for grad school. And then I was rear-ended by another Chevette (Y'all are lucky the world didn't end!) and the problem was solved to the tune of $650.

Re: 3.0 OS Update
could be RobbM, this was the first time I had an issue and it was a DVD drive of all things, I thought those never crapped out!
Before the 15" MBP I had a Pismo, I usually sold my products to upgrade to the new, not because there was a hardware death.iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, Plantronics 320, Mac OS 10.6.3 on a 15" MacBook Pro, Airport LAN & WiFi, att.net, PDA path: Palm i705 (2004 - son)=> Palm Tungsten TX (4/06 - sold) => Nokia 6682 (7/06 - 7/08) => iPhone 3G (7/08 - 7/10 now used by son) => iPhone 4 (7/10 - current w/ work SIM) & Nokia (?)(7/10 - current w/ home SIM)

Re: 3.0 OS Update
Unfortunately it's just a plain jane mastercard - the only major card I own. I never use to charge stuff until I started finding things on the Internet that I wanted. Like when I jumped at the chance to get a 1st gen refurb iPhone for $249 in March of 2008. I know I should have purchased the optional Apple Care for it but never got around to doing so.
I stopped by the At&t store yesterday morning to see if there was anything they could do. Their records show that my warranty wasn't up until September 2009! I was like, "Woo Hoo! Fix my phone!". Sadly, they informed me that Apple does all the repair work and since Apple showed my warranty as ending in March, then I was DRT.
I tried to get the $175 early term fee pro-rated and spent a half-hour on the phone at the At&t store. Nobody seemed to know what the deal was until finally they transferred me to a Rep who indicated that it'd be the whole $175.
So, yeah. I'm a little soured on Apple. And I'm a little pissed at At&t. But they're just following the rules. It's really just my bad luck. And I'm gonna make sure that it doesn't happen to me again with either Apple or At&t._________________________

Re: 3.0 OS Update
at least you're honest and rational, some spin all sorts of yarns about why Apple is bad, or why PC is bad, as if such and such is norm.
the only time I ever had PC issues was back when I was running a math lab, not meth lab,
... we had about 200 students a day, not bad given we only had 25 seats, but our admin and login computers were kept busy ... I swear most of our issues had to do with the *cough* student IT people doing a ... er ... half*** job.
but it's all good looking back they were probably not even paid, you know, those students jobs where you work for tuition and books.iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, Plantronics 320, Mac OS 10.6.3 on a 15" MacBook Pro, Airport LAN & WiFi, att.net, PDA path: Palm i705 (2004 - son)=> Palm Tungsten TX (4/06 - sold) => Nokia 6682 (7/06 - 7/08) => iPhone 3G (7/08 - 7/10 now used by son) => iPhone 4 (7/10 - current w/ work SIM) & Nokia (?)(7/10 - current w/ home SIM)
