Re: Linux running on Iphone
It is just proof of concept. They don't actually having anything else running yet, even touchscreen support. Supposedly they want to port Android over at some point, but it is quite far away right now.
Even if you get WM running on an iphone, it won't ever be a mainstream offering. Microsoft and Apple would team up to destroy whoever created it. It's a major blow to both of them.

Re: Linux running on Iphone
Apple intentionally cripples their software for simplicity's sake, Microsquish doesn't care (Anyone can write anything, and WM isn't under-featured in the first place), and the *nix people encourage development and source code changing. Linux would be interesting, but depending on what it can do, it might or might not be a big deal. If it adds features the iOS doesn't have, good; that makes the iPhone a possibility when I upgrade. If it doesn't, I won't really care.
Meanwhile, I'll go play Super Mario Bros. 3 on an SNES emulator (muted) with my third party calendar app syncing with Google Calendar in the background and S2P playing music through A2DP BT stereo headphones while my stock monitor app updates itself through WiFi, both running in the background...

Re: Linux running on Iphone
Don't know if you were responding to my point about MSFT going after anyone who ports WM to an iPhone, but my reasoning behind that is that MSFT doesn't get their $$ if you do that. They make their winmob money through licensees, so if you do an end run around that system MSFT will be most displeased.

Re: Linux running on Iphone
palmgeek i liked your ideas.
Every operating system have some pros and cons. If one can run MAC and Windows on desktops together then why not multiple OS on phones. I don't say WM is an ideal system but it has deep roots. I do have applications which I used on my previous WM smart phone. It will be great if I could use them on Iphone. Similarly Android has exiting stuff in line.
Finally its the feel of freedom which beats everything.
Just look at this blog also. I just found it.

Re: Linux running on Iphone
I meant that out of the box, WM does the most (some of it not very well), and anyone can write third party software or drivers for it as long as they don't reverse engineer anything or rom nick anything, Linux encourages everyone to do anything they want with it and develop any app for any reason, and Apple is totalitarian when it comes to development. I prefer freedom and choice over the whole 'we'll tell you what you want' thing Apple seems to be doing ATM. As for the GUI, on the iThings, you can rearrange icons and change a few minor settings that still annoy me, but not as much. On WM, you have PointUI's Home, SPB's Mobile Shell, and for simple, insignificant little color changes, VJay555's VJ Base Hue. On Palm OS, you have SkinUI/PalmRevolt and ZLauncher, etc. I'm pretty sure that on Symbian and even Blackberries you can at least change system colors. My old free-with-the-plan W300i had themes. And no, I don't like the plain black background on the main screen, and I'd rather have a Today-like screen (or the Agenda view in Calendar on Palm OS devices) than the list of apps.
