Is is a PDA? I was on the fence and couldn't really decide. There were several good points made on each side but after hearing about the calendar input issue, I have to vote no. This is still a media device at heart with a few features indigenous to a PDA. If I can't make an appointment on the fly and enter a simple date, then my Personal Data Assistant isn't assisting me. There are several other issues including input that pushed me over to the non-PDA side of the fence but the calendar thing made the final decision for me.

Don't get me wrong, I love this thing. I really do. But it's simply not designed to function in a work environment and handle tasks thrown at it quickly. Maybe that's not what the definition of a PDA truly is....but it is for me and my TX. The iTouch is an entertainment device used for music and video and there are some other fun secondary features such as WFi, YouTube and that weird Starbucks thingy.

With all that said, I ordered my very cool media-playing iTouch yesterday.

What would be really cool is if it could emulate a Palm... that could render many concerns moot until full-blown, Palm comparable, real to-do, ebook, astro, calendar, etc. programs are made for it (and Apple actively endorses such).

Note: Apple just announced that updates will hamper, block, render dysfunctional those transferred app programs. Let's hope they see the folly of their way and open up, at least the iTouch, to 3rd party developers, non-Safari based programs.

If Apple spends a lot of energy planting hedges around their API so the iTouch can't run my favorite 3rd party apps, I will lose interest in a hurry. Without 3rd party apps, it is not a real pda no matter how well they do their built-in pim apps. ALso, no matter how quickly they "authorize" 3rd party developers it probably won't be fast enough for me. Nice way to push me to the sidelines Mr. Jobs. Figure that out all by yourself, did ya? I guess Hawkins isn't the only visionary with tunnel vision.

Can you point us to your source for this announcement? I read the exact opposite here:

I read the something to the contrary at iLounge as well. They said that Apple is taking a neutral position towards these apps, which means that while they won't concern themselves with making sure they are not broken by updates, they will not purposely break them either.

i wonder if what really is going on is that apple will not support such 3rd party apps, in this litigation happy environment (recall the "I forgot to pull off the plastic covering the speaker"-Lawsuit), people will sue for anything, I wonder is an obscure sentence somewhere is apple just covering their backsides?

One of Apple's VP said they were taking a neutral stance; then Apple itself released a quick follow up that updates definitely could break, hamper, 3rd party add-ons--a decidedly negative advisory. Google it to find the story... it came up either via MacSurfer or MacNewsNetwork or...

I certainly wouldn't buy either the iPod Touch or the iPhone expecting 3rd party apps to work! It's not like Palm/SONY, etc. with PDAs being open to all comers.
