Okay i know the Iphone cost 499 with a two year contract, but how much will it cost without the contract? I hope cingular doesnt expect buyers to purchase a data plan with the phone.

Cingular DOES expect buyers to purchase a contract. Otherwise they have no means to recover the funding from their side.

Currently, Cingular says that no, it will not at all be possible to buy the phone without a contract. If you're an existing customer, you can get it at the same price, but you'll need to sign a new contract. And chances are that they will require some kind of data plan.
