    Default Query

    Dear Group,
I recently inherited a Palm IIIc and am in the process of getting acquainted.
This thing reminds me of my old Radio Shack TRS-100 ?Laptop?.
I was amazed at the small size of the thing, and shocked at the power it had.
Well, this Palm IIIc is about 1/8 the size of the 100, and I have no idea of it?s potential.
I like the organizational programs it has in it, but to be honest, they are useless to me.
The only thing I MUST remember is my anniversary and one birthday. If I forget the second birthday I must remember, I look at my driver?s license.
What I would like to use it for is to keep track of my inventory of Solid State devices. (Transistors and IC?s) (OK, so you collect stamps!)
You old timers might remember a DOS program called PC File by Jim Button. I have been using it for this purpose since 1983. It served me well.

    This is what I have.
    Technical info:
Palm IIIc with Palm OS software v. 3.5.3
    Palm HotSync Manager v. 4.1.0
    Palm Desktop v. 4.1.4
    Quick Install v. 1.1

    Here is what I envision:
Possibly using Microsoft Access as the main program.
It would include extensive information about each item, including ?nomenclature?, the ?location?, and how many I have ?on hand?.
    Now for the tricky part.
I would like to use the Palm IIIc to be able to input the ?nomenclature? and find the ?location? of the item. Having located the item I would like to be able to change the number I have ?on hand?.
At the end of the day, I would like to be able to hot-sync to the main program and update it.

    Your opinion pleas!
Is this a pipe dream, or a good idea?
If it is not a pipe dream, any ideas as to where to start?
It has been many years since I did any actual programming, and am not familiar with the new programs or what is available today.
If you are knowledgeable, please point me in the right direction.
Your time and effort is appreciated.
    Sincerely,

    Tiberius

Hello Tiberius, and welcome to Brighthand!

OK, if you are looking to use Microsoft Access as the main database, you can use DataViz's Smartlist to Go 3.0. Your Palm IIIc just meets the minimum requirements of Palm OS 3.5 or higher. Plus, Smartlists to Go can synchronize with Access.

    Check it out here.

I also added some descriptive text to your thread title.

    Dear Alan,
    Thank you for your reply.
I am taking your suggestion and will take a close look at Smartlist.
It looks like it will more than fill my requirement.
You say that OS 3.5.3 is minimum.
I have been reading about the OS upgrades available.
From what I have been able to gather, 3.5.3 is the newest OS available for the Palm IIIc
Please correct me if I am wrong.
    One more question.
Is there anything available that can sort of ?backup? (Memory dump?) the Palm?
Again, I would like to thank you for your time and effort.

MemorySafe 8MB is only device that I am aware of that will backup your data on a series III device besides performing a Hotsync.

From what I have been able to gather, 3.5.3 is the newest OS available for the Palm IIIc
The update is the latest version available for free.

Palm OS v4.1 upgrade is no longer sold by palmOne, but have read of several users locating on ebay. It is not avaialble for download but on a CD.
