Default New owner needs advice and tips.

I recently got a Palm IIIe pretty new. (I know, it's old, but I didn't pay much.)
What I was wondering is if I could get some tips or advice.
    Like:
    1) It has OS 3.1.1. I know you can't upgrade the OS on this model, but is/are there any patches or files that I may need to install to fix something or make something better?

    2) It only has 2MB memory. Is there some place you can send a IIIe to get more memory installed? If so, where can I get such info?

    3) My unit has a "name" of "Fred Flintstone" (default? Or previous owner playing around?) I see this name when my laptop with IR port says "Fred Flintstone is in range." And Fred is the default name for files and game high scores. How can I change this? I've looked all through Prefs and read the manual, and kind find anything on it.

    4) Any other general helpful tips from other IIIe owners? =) Like what are some good VERY small sized txt and spreadsheet applets that will run on it well?

Thanks for any advice and suggestions!

    Not that I know of.

    Here or here.

You can launch the Palm Desktop, Tools, Users, Rename; then the next time you hotsync, then name will be changed. Or you can use ChangeName. But realize, if you're using software that came with the Palm, that often the user name is used for registration purposes; if you change it, that software may no longer think it is registered and may stop working for you.

    Thanks for the feedback!
About the Pilot's name, though; the name is on the Pilot itself. I only just downloaded and installed the Windows desktop. It gave me the option to make up a name.
I'm considering doing a hard reset on it, will that clear out the "Fred Flintstone?"

Anyway, I'm supposed to get the cradle and software, etc from the seller tomorrow. Until then, is there a way to sync the Palm using the downloaded version of the Desktop and a laptop's IR port?
I see in the systray the Desktop icon has an option for "infrared", but I get the error "Error accessing IR port. See the //Helpnotes//IR_Readme.txt for more information." I can't find that file.
Though I CAN beam files FROM the Pilot to my laptop just using the built in Win2000Pro "Wireless Links" =)

    Thanks for all the help!!

I know that. My advice was predicated on the belief that you had already synced with the Palm Desktop at least once.

    Yes.

Exit HotSync Manager. Go to the Windows Control Panel and double click the "Wireless Link" icon. In the "Image transfer" tab, uncheck the box for "Use Wireless Link to transfer images from a digital camera to your computer". Restart HotSync Manager. Go to the HotSync menu and check the "Infrared" menu item.
