Question Windows Me & e-machine -- plugging in Hot Sync cord makes computer freeze!

I just bought a IIIc - when I plug the Hot Sync into the Com1 port on my compuer, the cursor can move, but the rest of the screen is frozen. I called Palm - they said it is a Windows Me problem (typical) and suggested trying other ports - I don't have others. Should I buy a USB adapter??

    Talking Hot sync with ME

You can try using the USB connect kit. I had the same problem with my PC when I had ME installed. Whenever I use the cradle my PC freezes. No problems with 98. Had to use my travel cable in order to sync. When I upgraded to XP, the cradle worked fine in the same machine. I guess there's some truth to skipping ME and jumping to XP or just staying at 98. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your help. I contacted a company that sells the USB kit and they said it wouldn't work. Palm said it may be a defective cradle. Interesting responses! I think I will try it on my other computer, with Windows 95. Unfortunately, it doesn't have alot of space for the programs, so I would need to dump a big program. But it would be worth it to get this to work!

Where did you get your USB kit?

I don't have a USB adapter but I've heard there are many problems regarding using a cradle under ME. Try first to hotsync on another computer. As I told you earlier, I was able to sync using my cradle when I was using 98 and when I upgraded to XP. It's not the cradle but the compatibility of your PC's board and ME.

I tried it on my other computer and it worked. Now I cannot get the HotSync to find the correct port. I don't know the port number, so I will be checking with HP to see if they know the number of the Serial port. I can't find my book that goes with it. I did download what I needed from Windows as it uses Windows 95.

    Default Com ports

Normally Com ports 1 & 2 are available, Com 3 is for your internal modem and Com 4 is usually reserved for IR devices mostly found in laptops. Just try com settings in the Palm Desktop to know which ones work with the cradle.
