Default cancelling data plan with nexus one on AT&T

I couldn't find the original thread, but I had asked about cancelling the data plan with an unlocked nexus one phone a couple months ago. Anyways I had put off calling AT&T until today. They gave me no hassles about cancelling my data plan. The only thing they needed was a IMEI #, which you can find by pressing *#06#. Also just to be safe I asked for a data opt out, but hopefully I can still access wifi. If not I will have to call back and request pay-per-use, but I am nervous about getting some 300 dollar bill when I think I am using wifi but am actually using AT&T data! Well just wanted to let people know about this because I think some others said they wanted to do the same thing.

Since the Nexus One for AT&T is unlocked, this isn't a big deal-- it isn't under contract. It will use wifi if there is a wifi network in range. A data block does not affect wifi.

You can also put the phone in airplane mode and then separately turn on wifi. You won't be able to receive calls like that, but you will know for sure you are not using data.

LG Nexus 4: AT&T (Gophone), Android 4.4.2, stock and unrooted-- and probably staying that way.

It's interesting that you can put it in airplane mode and turn on wifi. Airplane mode, by definition, means no radio: no phone, no BT, no wifi.

On my TP2, if I put it in airplane mode, it turns off all radios. I can turn on just wifi at this point, but it also turns off airplane mode. To be clear -- it's only wifi that gets turned on: not phone or data communications over Sprint's network. I can also selectively turn off the radios.

I believe that if I'm connected to a wifi network, the TP2 automatically uses it and will not use data on Sprint. I have to turn off wifi (or at least disconnect from any wifi network) before I can use Sprint's data. Do you know if it's the same on the Nexus One?

Airplane mode does turn off all radios. If wifi is on, putting the Nexus One in airplane mode turns it off. However, it will then allow you to turn on wifi back on but will remain in airplane mode otherwise. It will not allow you to turn on BT in airplane mode. This makes perfect sense given that many airlines are now offering on-board wifi.

And, yes, if wifi is available, it will automatically choose wifi over 3G, at least if it knows the network (I haven't tested the case where there is a network available but you have never aquired it before).
