Speaker volume video
There's been some concern about speaker volume, so I made a quick video of the sound on mine, just playing some music and talking at room volume to compare. I set the system volume at the loudest level for these.
You can watch it here:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZuKkiVyK3I
It's not earth shatteringly loud playing music (as opposed to the alarm which makes me jump out of my skin), but it's a decent volume (this coming from a rock head who likes her music loud
) I can easily hear it from the next room, so I don't regard it as soft at all. On headphones I'd never play it over 40% volume - I value my eardrums!
Let me know if there's a standard sound clip somewhere that'll give everyone a better indication of the volume. But I hope this gives some indication of the speaker volume.
EDIT: To say that since I've got the camera out, if someone wants me to test something let me know and I'll see what I can do!

Re: Speaker volume video
Sounds ok to me, though I was hoping to hear the alarm too with its jumping-out-of-skin volume. Thanks for posting it for us.
This makes me wonder if those with the quiet speaker are experiencing a hardware defect (rather than a poor design issue) which needs to be fixed under warranty...?"Always be kinder than necessary, for everybody is fighting some sort of battle."

Re: Speaker volume video
^ Sure, I'll record the alarm if that'll help.
I don't think I need a video to show that, I'll just record off the mic. Could someone recommend a good voice recorder?

Re: Speaker volume video
I'm wondering that myself. This is driving me nuts. My 4150 is MUCH louder from its one little tiny speaker.
After some extensive testing, I have concluded there is NO sound coming from the front hp logo. One of the experiments I conducted was playing a song in Pocket Player with different balance settings. When set all the way to the left, it sounds the same. With it set all the way to the right, it goes dead! I'm wondering if this is the result of a botched attempt at stereo sound?
Can another 210 owner with Pocket Player 3.5 try this? The balance is a manual setting in the options. Set yours to 128 and play a song.

Re: Speaker volume video
Sounds like a wiring problem to me. Call HP and ask them.

Re: Speaker volume video
I have had HP Handhelds since the HP 95LX. My previous iPAQ was the HP 4700. I now have the iPAQ 214. The volume from the brand new iPAQ 214 which I finally received after waiting nearly 4 months is faulty. With the volume cranked up to all the sound coming from the speaker (note not speakers) is barely audible.
On calling the HP UK customer support I was told that other people had complained about this. It was obvious that this person (or HP) had no clue what was the solution to this problem. It was suggsted that I try a soft reset (done that!). Then it was suggested that I try a hard reset. Now when help desks tell me to try a soft/hard reset I know that I am firmly in the "clutching at straws" help desk response. The equivalent of a doctor telling you to take an aspirin. Nope, the hard reset did not work (as I rexpected). In my experience it is very rare to get an intelligent response from a help desk and this occasion was - I fear - a case in point.
It was suggested that I send the unit in for repair. My response was "bugger that" send me a brand new unit. Repair is adding insult to inhjury. First of all the product was delayed for months and then the unit has at least one basic flaw!!
