PDA News - iPaq 6300 on Cingular, Mobile Antivirus, Windows Push email
iPaq h6320 released on Cingular
Cingular has finally proceeded with the release of their version of the iPaq h6300 PocketPC phone. The release was originally reported to be scheduled for mid-April, however converged devices are notorious for slipping their release dates.
Other than small software modifications, the h6320 is identical the the T-Mobile version of the device, known as the h6315. It includes Bluetooth, WiFi, GSM/GPRS, and a 168 MHz processor. It does not support Cingular's high-speed EDGE data network. Initial pricing is $579 for the camera-less h6320; $599 for the h6325.

Software giant Computer Associates has inked a deal with i-mate to bring CA's eTrust Antivirus software to i-mate's line of PocketPC phones. The agreement will provide eTrust software with future generations of i-mate devices, as well as making it available to existing i-mate users at a "subsidized" price.
At this point, there is no real virus threat to mobile devices, nor is there likely to be in the forseeable future. This move is mostly an attempt to appeal to corporate and government users whose regulations require that devices have antivirus protection.
Microsoft unveils 'push' email system for WM5
Nearly a month after debuting the rest of Windows Mobile 5.0, Microsoft has unveiled the long-expected capability for 'push' email. Part of the "Messaging and Security Feature Pack," the new push email system provides for instant delivery of messages to users of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
The Messaging Pack, rather than being a standard feature on WM5, will be an add-on for device manufacturers. This will make push email optional, so for manufacturers that differentiate their business and consumer products--such as HP--the capability would likely only be included in the business models.

Lag-reduction hack for LifeDrive
A PalmOS developer known as Sharky has developed a program to help counteract hard-drive-related lag issues on the PalmOne LifeDrive. SharkCache allows the user to select up to 4 MB worth of applications to move permanently into the LifeDrive's 10 MB of program RAM. This eliminates the lag when launching these programs. SharkCache costs $10, and has a 7-day trial period.

I'm wondering why Cingular decided to offer this phone. Not only is it a yawn at this point, I think the general consensus is the phone is largely crap. Cingular should think about investing time in polling users...though they probably did when they started the approval process a year ago.

My guess is they decided they had to do something since HP delayed the "mobile messenger" device. Plus they probably got a screaming deal on the units.

MY hp 6325 came with hardware defects as diagnosed by thier own techs. It has gsm ,blutooth, and mail problems. It looks like another 6315 ipaq failure. HP shopping jason garb rep reports hp will not replace defectve phone and will only ship a new one if you pay 700.00 for a second one. Hp strikes out again!!!
