Default Google Is Letting Motorola Die Discussion

When Google shelled out $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobile in August 2011, the whole industry knew what the search engine company wanted, and it wasn't to get into the smartphone business. Google wanted Motorola's catalogue of mobile phone patents and intellectual property.

Too bad, because they actually make a few nice phones recently (Razr Maxx, etc.).

That would be too bad. I do think sooner or later Motorola will die regardless Google bought them or not. Although Motorola isn't depleting cash as fast as RIM and Nokia and Motorola could actually last longer before it goes belly up.

There was a calculation that claims that Google actually only has a true cost of $2.5+ billion for Motorola, as a lot of the $12.5 billion can be converted into tax shelter. Many of the parts can be sold off, and it appears Google has done so by selling the set top box division for over $2.5 billion. The factories in China can be sold to either Huawei or ZTE for example.

I do think Google has a long term interest in making hardware and there are many ways they can use Motorola. There are rumors about an "X" phone and an "X" tablet even as we speak.

When Google bought Motorola Mobility, there were theories that Google was going to use it to become more like Apple -- a vertical business that produces smartphones and tablets as well as the software to run them. Clearly, this isn't going to happen.

Motorola isn't going anywhere with its current structure. It is much too big and slow for its output, 5 million plus smartphones per quarter, when everyone else has overtaken them in things just Android --- Huawei, Lenovo, ZTE, LG, Sony. They have been kicked out of the top 5 smartphone producers some quarters ago, and I believe they have been kicked out of the top 10. Huawei and ZTE are moving up with a sense of manifest destiny, LG, Sony and Lenovo are having a resurgence. They only have two paths from now on. Either die completely or go into a near death syndrome, where the entire corporate structure needs to be overhauled from top to bottom, before it can rise again.

Exactly my thinking: some of the best recent smartphones were Motorola. My next device would be too, if they would sell me a RAZR MAXX HD with a sliding keyboard.

Theoretically, but I'm a little iffy about that. Motorola hasn't seemed to care much about their original Droids lately; the Droid 4 was kind of terrible compared to the competition.

I think the qwerty thing has fully run its course, and there is a good possibility Motorola won't make another out of their own volition. It would be up to the carriers, Verizon or Sprint, to order one custom made. Samsung ain't making sliders either unless its for a carrier.

Shame about Motorola--more choice is better for everyone.

Sorry for the tangent, but here goes: QWERTY is the best argument there is for BB10 distinguishing itself from other OSes out there right now. Meet the gorgeous, modern BB X10: Blackberry 10-based X10 Poses For Camera - Mobile Magazine
