By 2021, we may have flying cars. I know, I know, they keep promising those.

Verizon's PR staff contacted me this afternoon to step back a bit from Khurjekar's statement. I have updated the article as appropriate. Nevertheless, I tend to believe that the Verizon VP was accurate in her estimate that this company will stop offering 2G and 3G within a decade.

It only makes sense, especially when you consider that they're talking about full 4G deployment by the end of 2013, and that presumably the overwhelming majority of non-4G devices would have left the network by within a few years after that. 2021 is actually a bit longer than I'd have expected them to leave it running.

A decade is an eternity in this industry; not that I don't appreciate the warning. I hope that well before then data programs will finally become more affordable and allow more people to get the use out of it.

Back when I had a BB8800, it was a 2G device and worked quite well on only 2 g's because I was mostly just sending and receiving email. I waited til I got home to do any real websurfing. For that 2G is pretty much useless. I think 3G has a lot of life left but in 10 years, 4G will be getting pretty long in the tooth. We may be on the 5th or 6th G by then.
