Default Steve Wozniak Wants a Bigger iPhone Discussion

Steve Wozniak has not been directly involved with Apple in many years, but he did co-found the company along with Steve Jobs. So when he criticizes Apple, people tend to pay attention.

Poor guy. He'll just have to use one of the Android or WP devices he also owns
Samsung Galaxy S III (U.S. Cellular, unrooted, Launcher8). My review.
Sony VAIO Duo 11 (i3-3217U, 11.6" 1080p IPS, N-Trig stylus, Windows 8). My video review; handwriting test.
    Sony VAIO F2390X (i7-2670QM, 540M, 16.4" 1080p, Windows 7 Pro). My video review.

Seriously, he can afford to buy one of everything and make his own comparisons.

I'm with Woz. I'd like one more in the 4.5 inch range, with a less-narrow format. I haven't held a new iP5 yet; but it looks a bit odd to me.

Lelisa, he could probably afford to put the iP5 innards into a custom shell with a larger screen. I remember those kits that let you repackage an SE/30 into a 2-piece box-and-screen format with color support (a big deal in those days), because the SE/30 had the ability to drive a color monitor.

He already has. In addition to his iPhone, he owns and operates a Galaxy Nexus and Lumia 900. He's 100% grade-A-certified fanboy-loyalty free. One of the coolest guys in the tech industry.

Not to mention, he's made an appearance in The Big Bang Theory as himself.

I own an iPhone 4 and a Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0. On my iPhone, I can unlock my screen with one hand. Every time. On my GP5, I almost always need to reach over and hit OK after entering my 5 digit unlock code with the thumb of the hand that is holding the device. The last digit is in the row of buttons just above the OK button but I can't easily reach it without shifting the device. It's downright painful. To give you an idea of the size of my hand, I can't wear a small but I can squeeze into a medium surgical glove. A large fits somewhat loosely. I probably would have been acquitted in the OJ Trial.

Also the GP5 is larger but has lower resolution than the IP4. Things look a lot better on the iP4 screen despite the fact it is smaller. I have an iP5 on order. I'll try to get a GS3 in my hands to compare and see how I like them side by side but for now I think Woz is speaking for a niche rather than pointing out a massive oversight on Apple's part.

The real reason ppl have those big screens is they couldn't even get iPhones on their carriers until just over a year ago. There are hundreds of Android models and only a handful of iPhones including 3GS, 4, 4S and 5. Would a 5 inch iPhone sell well? Sure it would. But would it justify the cost of adding a 4th major configuration to Apple's lineup? I don't think so.

I have small hands (the peanut gallery can SHUT UP RIGHT NOW), but I like a large smartphone because it's so much easier to two-thumb type on, and I do a LOT of email on my phone. I really liked the feel of two-thumb typing on the HTC Titan (4.7") when I tried it out. With a 3.6" screen like my current device, I have to one-finger type instead of two-thumb type (when using the on-screen keyboard...my current phone has a slider keyboard, but that's not the point of this post).

Barring the huge Galaxy Note [which is the only thing I've been able to type with both thumbs in portrait] my iPhone 4S had easily the easiest typing for me despite the small screen, don't know whether it's due to software or better than average quality digitizers but it smokes any 4.3-4.7" Android model I've owned.Somehow, I think there's more to it than just the screen size.

As much as I like these larger screen devices, I could be happier with a conventionally-sized screen coupled with a hardware keyboard, like the Samsung Stratosphere even though I still have reservations about sliders.
