How can Nokia make T-Mobile's Lumia 810 sooooooo attractive and Verizon's Lumia 822 sooooooo ugly?
Samsung Galaxy S III (U.S. Cellular, unrooted, Launcher8). My review.
Sony VAIO Duo 11 (i3-3217U, 11.6" 1080p IPS, N-Trig stylus, Windows 8). My video review; handwriting test.
    Sony VAIO F2390X (i7-2670QM, 540M, 16.4" 1080p, Windows 7 Pro). My video review.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Both are just rectangles, like most smartphones these days. One looks a little rounder on the corners, I guess. Please tell me what you were seeing.

The Lumia 810 has crisp, dramatic lines:

The Lumia 822 looks like a well-used bar of soap with no distinct lines at all:

I personally find the latter approach very unattractive. (I'd make the same distinction between the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S3 Mini, just comparing case design to case design).

I have to admit, the 810 is sweet. I like the 920 too. Too bad they have WP on them. I'd love to have a Nokia again.

I have to agree too. The 810 is nicer by a lot. But obviously that's subjective.

I guess I'm less discriminating. They look different but I can take or leave either one.

I have probably an excessive interest in aesthetic design, even with electronics. So I may be excessively nitpicky.

Especially considering that the majority of smartphone owners put some cheap, ugly protective case over it, meaning that they never see the OEM's case design at all.

Yeah, and again, I have never had a case on my HTC Nexus One. I carry it in a belt pouch, but the device is magnificently naked when in use. Actually, even though it was a little more plasticky, I did the same thing with my Nokia 5800 which was also quite nicely designed. Was never even tempted to do that with my Samsung.

That does make it kind of pointless. My Galaxy is quite slim and compact but I have one of those rubber+plastic things on mine as well. For me it's only half a solution since it gives me some drop protection but very little protection against rain (I spend a lot of working hours outside). A rubber coating does have the benefit of making it harder for the device to slip out of a shirt pocket at least.

Once again I lament that devices aren't more world-proof anyway. Gorilla Glass is a definite step in the right direction but the headlong rush toward slim, slimmer, slimmest precludes and cushioning built into the device.

IF devices were made tougher in the first place, there would be no need to wrap them in anything. And nobody would complain except the accessory manufacturers.
