Ed.....if there is one released, do you think it will have LTE available, or just wifi? I've heard so many conflicting reports about that. If I were to get one, it would be wifi only, as I could just connect it with personal hotspot, if needed.

I haven't heard anything about any kind of cellular support. I really wanted one, and then I realized that if I got one, I'd have to recode all my music to Apple Lossless. It can handle WAV (I think); but those files are massive, so even a 64GB model wouldn't hold much. Nice looking device though.

Well, you could always recode them to a lower bit rate for the iPad, but I'm picky about that and just have different playlists and swap them around. I like the apple lossless. I'm one if those with the cursed ear and can hear the difference. 8-9 hours of music is plenty for me. I'm actually thinking of getting my first iPod (well I did have the first touch). Be great for the car and the fm is good for listening to games or for walks.

My iPod Touch is showing its age, but I am not sure if the new iPod Touch is going to work with the factory stereo of my Mazda MX-5 with built in iPod support. If not I may just the money instead to get a new stereo. Certainly the dock connector won't physically fit the new iPod Touch but there is the new adapter that can bridge that. However, I don't know if the software on the stereo can work through the adapter.

Dunno about Mazda, but I hear the previous iPod setup for the BMW's will not work with the new one. Audio and charging will work with the adapter, but not the display etc. Thats why when I had the system installed in my 2002 bmw, I opted for the simple 3mm jack, that interfaced with the CD changer wiring (which is optical from the rear to the radio....its some serious work to put it in) instead of the iPod setup. That way, I can put in an ipod, XM, gps, whatever I want to the radio. Of course, I can't get the display on the radio, but I just stick it on shuffle anyway. After a recent vacation, and using my iPhone for its music, I have been considering the new iPod Nano, and just plugging in the audio jack. Another of those reasons why I cancelled my iPhone 5 order, as I wanted to wait for the new docks, etc. BTW...I just received an email yesterday from ProClip. They have a new iPhone 5 holder, with charger, and it uses the standard new Apple usb cord with lightning connector, Bring your own cable. So, it seems companies are finding ways to work with the new hardware.

I don't see the point of attaching a music player to a car's stereo when it could simply use a USB stick. As long as I know what songs are on there, I don't need album art. I haven't taken a look at the car stereos available these days but surely they display the song and artist. Even my factory-installed stereo on my 2001 Chevy does that with CD music.
I've often considered buying an Ipod Touch. It's the only Apple product I've had a serious yen for. But at this point, I think my next music player will probably be my old Android phone when I upgrade. I don't carry so much music that it can't be held on a SDHC so far. If I do, I WILL get another music app to replace the stock Android player, though.

Yeah I agree about the USB stick, but unless I change my radio, USB stick won't work. If I had a usb port, that would be the way to do it. Unfortunately, in my particular case, replacing the radio on the older BMW is too problematic. Steering wheel controls, computer connection thats displayed on both dash and radio, etc. Oh I could do it, but no reason. Its a great sounding radio. I'll just use the 3mm plug for the foreseeable future. On the other hand, I have a couple other cars that are standard, or double DIN that replace easily. And I think the idea of using your old Android phone is a great idea. Nothing like stretching out the useful life of gadgets

We got a late 90's Bimmer, got the stereo that integrates to the steering wheel and all that. Dunno how my brother found this new stereo unit, we managed to replace the original stereo. It has a touch screen with graphics with a USB port that I can put my Apple cable on and works with the iPod Touch. Probably works with a micro USB cable with an Android phone or straight up with a flash drive. But this is not what I rely everyday which is instead a Toyota and it uses a standard audio jack. Easy to just use either my iPod Touch or use my current Android phone with Google Music, caching music off the cloud with mobile data.
The stereo panel on my Miata is an integrated one. I shudder at the thought of having to dig it out and replace it although it sounds inevitable. I just wonder how much it will cost. Or maybe keep my iPod Touch or look for a used 4th Gen one. There is a chance the 5th Gen iPod Touch will work with the proper intermediate (Lightning port to old iPod port), but there is a chance the old stereo won't work on it too. The software on the stereo unit was never flawless to begin with. For example in the beginning my iPod Touch could charge from it (that was the first or second Gen unit). But the third Gen could play but not charge. Dunno why. I sense the stereo software was meant for older devices and its stretching support for every new and newer device.
At this point, one car has a standard audio jack, one car has a USB port and one car has an iPod port. At the moment my old iPod Touch works on all three, the first one can work off my Androids with Google Music, the second with a USB stick or micro USB cable but I often prefer to leave an Apple cable on that port. The third, well, with the integrated stereo and iPod connector and no port or jack for anything else, can only work with my ever aging iPod Touch. I need to give this some thought.

Re: Apple's First iPod touch with 4-Inch Touchscreen Begins Shipping Discussion
I'm normally pleased with the capabilities of factory-installed units. Haven't replaced one since my '67 Camaro, which had an original unit the size of a small television when removed. It does seem rather too much effort to replace a stereo just to get one capability.
I haven't been looking, but it seems that by now most cars should have a USB slot. My son's little Ford Focus has one but it's an aftermarket that was installed in this used car when we got it. He just carries some CDs so we haven't tried it yet.
