Two weeks after unveiling the latest edition of its popular touchscreen handheld, Apple is taking pre-orders of the latest iPod touch but the company is only giving a vague release window of October, leaving longing customers in the dark.

This is the first time a Touch has tempted me. I just wish they'd not chintzed out with offering 'last year's' processor. I know they don't want to cannibalize iPhone sales; but I doubt they would even if it had the A6. And the camera is better, if not up to the iP5's.

My old iPod Touch is showing its age, and I got an enormous iTunes investment. I might consider a 64Gb iPod Touch again just to protect this investment. But that is going to cost me $399, which is as much as 16Gb iPad and certainly costs more than many Android tablets. Rumors of an iPad Mini could also throw a wrench on this. Might be cool if the new iPad Mini packs the Apple A6 processor. While some people say you should not care about specs, you should, because not only speed is speed but better specs are the best future proofing your tech investment has.
