With smartphones becoming a fixed feature in most people?s lives, a new study takes a look at how much it really costs to stay connected, finding that nearly half of the participants claimed to pay $100 or more per month for their mobile phone service and more than one-in-ten pay $200 or more.

Not surprising, particularly for a whole family.
I think that it's important to know what your average monthly usage is, and then find a plan that covers that, and not much more. No sense paying for what you'll never use.

Except that's what people have done with cable companies for years-- pay for a huge array cable service of which they maybe watch 5-10 channels 90% of the time. The Cable companies make it so that you can't just pay for what you want. The big carriers are the same. They force you to pay for what you don't use and punish customers who actually try to use it.

Which is a great case for exactly what shared plans should have been: buy only the amount of service you really need. And it would still be more profitable for the carriers, because it would entice more people into being able to have smartphones. Selling 20 plans at $10 a month is better than selling 5 plans at $30.
Unfortunately, the carriers are locked in on the "bundle everything" cable TV approach to service.
