Apple has sent out invitations to an event next week. While these don't explicitly state that the company is going to be unveiling a new smartphone, they drop a very unsubtle hint.

Wouldn't it only count as news if they called it something *other* than iPhone 5? ;-)

At this point last year, there was loads of evidence that Apple was just about to release the iPhone 5 (here's an example). Instead we got the iPhone 4S. Some good evidence that we're not going to have the rug pulled out from under us again is welcome... and newsworthy.

I don't want to jump the gun or nothin', but I have on pretty good authority that this phone will run iOS
Samsung Galaxy S III (U.S. Cellular, unrooted, Launcher8). My review.
Sony VAIO Duo 11 (i3-3217U, 11.6" 1080p IPS, N-Trig stylus, Windows 8). My video review; handwriting test.
    Sony VAIO F2390X (i7-2670QM, 540M, 16.4" 1080p, Windows 7 Pro). My video review.

Or Apple could have gone with "iPhone 4G", as this will (supposedly) be the first with 4G LTE. The first model from this company with 3G was called the "iPhone 3G", even though it was the second in this product line.

And this one will be the "iPhone 5," even though it's actually the sixth generation.

Actually (and this is a joke) it wouldn't be news either way, given that the iPad 3 is just called the 'iPad.'

Apple is touchy when consumers call it the iPad 3 and always list the latest version as The New iPad. It's akin to trying to get people to stop calling the iPod Touch an iTouch. Everyone knows what the item is regardless of what people call it. I gave up subtly correcting (by always calling it the correct name in conversation) my sister on the iPod Touch issue. She just doesn't get it. *sigh*

I am looking forward to September 12!
