Default iPhone 5 vs. iPhone 4S: a Visual Comparison Discussion

At this point, there have been enough leaks that it's a safe bet that the next-generation iPhone is going to have a larger screen than its predecessor. A new set of pictures show how much bigger.

4.5 inches? I thought up until this piece, BH was reporting it was going to be about 4-inches? Also, the resolution sounds like the screen is just longer, not wider. Odd resolution dimensions.

Yes, take a look at the picture. It's longer and not wider.

So the iPhone 5 gives up the "we're more square than the popular 16:9" strategy that Apple typically follows with its laptops, tablets, and phones, and instead adopts a 16:9 aspect ratio (like most Android flagships and the new WP8 Ativ S), but offers inferior resolution to Android and WP8 flagships. And uses a screen size that's decidedly "midrange" and not "flagship" by 2012 standards.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this seems like a series of baffling decisions that leave the brand-new iPhone 5 without any selling points in a back-to-back spec comparison with a One X, a Galaxy S3, an Ativ S, or whatever Nokia has in the pipeline. I mean, Apple fans will always claim "we've got the better OS," but the iPad 3 and the new MacBook Pro 15 also try to win spec wars with their competition, and the iPhone 5 doesn't seem to be doing that at all.

Well, as I always say in a situation like this.....its good to have choices. If you don't like it, buy something else. Personally, I'm glad its no wider. I don't need any larger bulges in my pants.

The Retina display has been a rare example of Apple jumping ahead of the competition in specs. For the most part, Apple doesn't make devices that are cutting edge. Instead, it focuses on user experience, providing customers with phones that are easy to use, without the daily irritations that come from slap-dash "that's good enough" software design.

In short, Apple's marketing doesn't say "big, fast, powerful" but rather "simple, easy, clean". It's an argument that average buyers often find appealing, but is less so to power users.

I would definitely not go so far as to say that the iPhone won't have any selling points; but the screen at 4 inches is only 'adequate' I'd say. Certainly much better than 3.5, which frankly was dumb even from day 1 in my opinion, given that Palm had 4 inch screens on their devices well before then. Their strengths will likely be in significant software updates (OS), battery power (still tops by far it seems), and design. I think people here know I have my issues with Apple; but they have many strengths.
