Re: Smartphones Are Starting to Replace Compact Cameras Discussion
I still have an old 4mp Canon with a viewfinder. I wouldn't begrudge the loss of them if the screens were daylight-viewable. You would think camera manufacturers would have thought about this.

Re: Smartphones Are Starting to Replace Compact Cameras Discussion
It's been 16 months since the Flip was killed off. In my opinion, saying "Smartphones are starting to Replace Compact Cameras" is almost like saying "Cars are starting to replace horses."
I'm not saying that smartphone cameras are better than compact cameras, but in terms of what the average consumer has room for in their pocket and their budget, this is old news to me.

If you have to replace a current generation point and shoot, you would need at least a top end superphone, e.g., HTC One X. There is still a quality disparity I see with high quality point and shooters vs. Smartphones, especially on low light and discriminating shades of red.
Please note the fact that many phones are throwing away one important facet it needs to match a modern point and shooter and that is a micro SD slot. Many cameras are also used to capture video and that's going to eat the SD.

Not to mention the drain video puts on the battery.

Re: Smartphones Are Starting to Replace Compact Cameras Discussion
For the last couple of years, camera phones have been decent. When I'd take a picture with them I'd look at it and think "That's not great, but it's better than nothing." With the latest generation of smartphones (especially ones that emphasize the camera) I look at my pictures and think, "Wow, why am I bothering to carry a point-and-shoot around?"

I was quite pleased with the results I got from my Motozine feature phone. The Galaxy does as well or better plus the SF processor allows more capabilities.
I do hope the niche for camera-centric phones will remain occupied by at least a few devices.
