Available last week of October? Source for that? My understanding is that Windows 8 and Windows RT would drop on October 26 but Windows Phone 8 devices wouldn't be released until November.

I'm glad they retained the physical shutter button.
I wonder what MS has to do to convince users of iPhones and Androids to abandon all the stuff they have established in the cloud and go over to an entirely new OS? I realize you can still access Gmail but what about downloading contacts, calendar & such?

Calendar and contacts sync just fine from a google account in WP7; I'm not sure why the same wouldn't be true of WP8.
The "killer app" of WP8 will likely be Xbox music. Both iTunes and Google Play make you buy stuff by the album. Neither have a subscription-based, all-you-want-for-a-fixed-monthly-fee setup. Xbox Music (the artist previously known as Zune Pass) and Spotify are the only two options, and Zune is a much, much better service than Spotify (yes, I've used both).Samsung Galaxy S III (U.S. Cellular, unrooted, Launcher8). iTunes etc. doesn't make you buy 'by the album.' You can buy single songs. Second, rumors are that Apple is developing a subscription-based model. They may 'crack the code,' but historically, paid subscription models have not really been successful. Why do you think that Xbox Music is going to be so much more successful than the same thing when it was called Zune Pass?

Agree with Varjak, have no idea what you mean by this. ITunes, Amazon and Google all allow you to buy by the song if you like. If you want a lot of the songs on an album, it is often cheaper to buy the album and sometimes the record companies insist a song be marked as album only, but they clearly let you buy by the song.
Personally, subscription services have no interest for me, but that's not a criticism.Hook's Stories

I guess I'm showing my age. My contacts are still the most important thing in my phone, and to a lesser extent, my appointments (not that I have so many). I still use my phone heavily for browsing but haven't found much time to listen to music, which I continue to buy in CDs, which I then rip.
I still do some reading and have several ereader apps but my eyes tire more easily of small screens these days.
I think WM will have to prove it can do the same things the other OSs do just as well, or better, if possible. If it doesn't succeed in convincing the public of that, no killer app will save it.

Still not a subscription model, an "all you can eat" model like Zune and Spotify. That's the distinction I was making. Paying X per month for unlimited access, versus paying by the item.
Since we haven't seen anything official from them years after Spotify got off the ground, it looks like it's getting Apple TV levels of support, not iPad levels of support, which doesn't bode well for it if/when it ever formally debuts.Second, rumors are that Apple is developing a subscription-based model.
Netflix has proven otherwise for visual media. Just ask Blockbuster how Netflix's subscription model has helped overwhelm the more traditional pay-by-the-item model. And the day I got a Netflix subscription was the last day I bought an episode of a show off iTunes. They may 'crack the code,' but historically, paid subscription models have not really been successful.
Spotify has also built up a lot of momentum in the past couple years.
Great service with a name like a scarlet letter on its chest. Because everyone associated Zune with a dead hardware line instead of a next-gen music service, the service had trouble bringing new people onboard. But I don't know anyone who has actually tried it and doesn't love it. The problem with the Zune name was getting people to try it. The Xbox name, on the other hand, has MASSIVE brand equity, at least in the US.Why do you think that Xbox Music is going to be so much more successful than the same thing when it was called Zune Pass?Last edited by Mitlov; 08-13-2012 at 10:57 PM.

I haven't kept up with what's being promised in WP8, but I thought better integration with outlook via cable was one of it's big things ?, along with accessible/removable storage so you can just dump a pile of music or files on the device
