Based on its popularity and wide availablity, I think anyone considering a smartphone should take a serious look at this one.

With so many units sold, if any bugs crop up you can be sure they will be fixed soon, and odds are very good you'll be getting official operating system upgrades for another year. There will be loads of accessories created for this model, and replacment parts should be easy to get as well.

If you buy a less popular model, you can't count on these things. Just something to think about.

If I was going Android, the Galaxy S III would be hard to ignore. From playing with a friends' phone, the screen is just the right size (not uncomfortably large as the 4.8" number makes it sound), it's pleasantly light, and the touchscreen is responsive and accurate. As you note, the advantage of buying a popular model over an obscure model is customer support from both the OEM and third parties.

I don't like the laggy animations (this is a US model), and I think the "inspired by nature" thing is overdone, but I guess everything has a downside.

I've never seen laggy animations in Android before. Admittedly, I've looked mostly at top-tier models; but that seems to be something only other people see, even Android proponents have seen and mentioned.

I had hoped to play with the SIII and the Evo 4G LTE side-by-side; but the Best Buy didn't have an SIII at the time. I'm going to go back and look at it; but after seeing the Evo, I think it's hard to beat (although I didn't like the arrangement of the buttons on the bottom: spread too wide apart and I didn't like the order). Even though the phone isn't really bigger than other models I've tried, my thumb couldn't easily reach the 'back' button all the way to the left. And I want the menu button back. A removable battery would be nice too, although I don't know if the SIII has one either.

The S III does have a fully removeable battery.

Both the S3 and the EVO LTE has 2100mah removable batteries. Both are evenly matched here and in addition to that both phones have the same dual core Qualcomm S4. So basically in paper they should have similar usage times.

I'm pretty sure that the battery is NOT removable on the Evo LTE. Numerous sources seem to confirm this.

Based on what's happening where I live, it seems to be a case of invest money in advertising/marketing and reap the rewards, I've NEVER seen so much marketing invested in any mobile device [iPhone incl] as what there's been for the SIII.

Must be regional. The only ad I've seen for the Galaxy S III is one I went looking for on YouTube. The iPhone is the king of advertising around here.
