Default Yelp for Android OS Review: Advice for Travelers Discussion

The premise behind Yelp is simple: it lets you search for nearby places of interest like restaurants, gas stations, bars, drugstores, etcetera. It also offers sponsored "deals" and location check-ins through Yelp's social networking service.

I'm almost surprised you spent time on reviewing this app. As your review noted, Yelp has lots of issues, not just with respect to the app. Sure people use it; but I'm not sure the app is that much of a priority.

I don't choose which apps to review, usually. Our software editor, Jacqueline Emigh, does that, based on criteria which I assume make sense from the editorial point of view. Although I do know we try to review apps which are "trending," i.e. popular in their category or up and coming. I'd assume that's why Yelp was chosen instead of, say, OpenTable, YP Local, etcetera.

Unfortunately Yelp is one of the worst apps that Android offers. I have had Yelp for years, as have many of my friends. When I made the switch to Droid over a year ago, Yelp was the first app I downloaded. I can say, without a doubt, the Yelp app available from the droid market is riddled with problems. They are constantly updating it every week or so, and with every update it works less each time. I can't count how many times I have been in San Diego or Los Angeles and Yelp has said I was in Chicago or New York. Their locator never works properly. I made the switch from Yelp to Foursquare and that app is flawless in every way. I have never had even a minor problem with the locator on Foursquare. I've noticed over the past year that every person I know has also switched from Yelp to Foursquare, so I'm definitely not the only one that noticed how terrible Yelp is.
