Information leaking out of Apple indicates that the next iPhone is going to have NFC (Near Field Communications). If true, it will enable this smartphone to be used like a wallet.

A different theory of currency connectivity for Apple involves the use of BT4 instead of NFC, enabling them to launch their service with many millions of iphone 4s' and iPad 3s ready to roll. In general, I'd love to have fewer protocols rather than more. Maybe NFC would be more secure as a sole payments protocol, but I doubt it will be used solely for payments anyway.
