On my Sylvania tablet, I downloaded a battery monitor that seemed to be more drain than monitor. I killed the task and my battery lasted longer.

That article would be more useful if it listed the apps that are known to cause drain.
Google official apps aren't immune to this: I installed Vtok (video calls) and it would eat my Player's battery in no time.

I think this is a pretty common issue. Individual app developers probably don't stress CPU and battery management enough, concentrating on their own apps and not how it will affect the overall performance of the device. Similar issues occur on computers, with programs that hog memory and CPU usage (and ultimately battery life on laptops).
