Default Ping, Apple's Social-Networking Service, Is On Its Way Out Discussion

If I said "Ping" to you, would you immediately think of a social-networking service that's tied to iTunes? The answer appears to be "no", as Apple is reportedly getting ready to close the doors on Ping from lack of interest.

Thank goodness. It was a really dumb "me, too" idea. Social network overkill.

I only noticed it long enough to disable & remove the panel from iTunes.

I didn't even notice it when using iTunes.
I read somewhere Samsung was thinking of doing their own social networking thing as well, wonder if that will suffer the same fate.
I love seeing one small victory for decentralization winning out in these days of everything being obsessively tied to a platform, even if I don't use the feature.

Even though lelisa and I don't agree on the proper OS for our desktop and laptops, I most CERTAINLY agree with her on this point. (I bet she has a Facebook account though)

Yes, I do, and I have never posted anything and only use it to see what my sister's family is up to. I have 4 friends. LOL

Technically I have an active Ping account, but I will not miss it.

The fact is that Ping has had a computer meaning since 1983, and anytime someone tries to "re-appropriate" the term to mean something else (which I have experienced a couple of times lately), it just sounds wrong to me.

It's sort of like when they launched a telecom brand called "KGB" - I was like, "Really?"
