Yeah, an iPhone 5 seems like a likely explanation.
I predict a larger, more luxurious, more expensive iPhone, and Apple will cede the entry-level smartphone market to Android and Apollo to duke it out (kind of like what they've done with laptops, not offering anything under $1000).Samsung Galaxy S III (U.S. Cellular, unrooted, Launcher8). Along with the news of the $50 discount, I suspect that a new iPhone is more imminent than originally projected.

A cynical person might suggest that since Apple doesn't want iPhone buying to slow down ahead of the new model, it might be in their best interest to let rumors say that it'll be the fall even if it's in the summer.
