1920 x 1080? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge believer in screen resolution. But frankly at this point we're just getting toward the absurd. 1080P on a 4.8 inch screen is 459 pixels per inch, and there's no real evidence that the average human eye can perceive above 300 pixels per inch.

I agree, Adama. The drive for ever higher screen resolutions on smartphones is starting to resemble the quest for more megapixels in stand-alone digital cameras: beyond a certain point, more is not better.

Not to mention it can actually be a drawback for the user--screens are going to be more and more expensive as you try to pack more pixels into a smaller area, driving up the cost for the buyer. And past a certain point, the end user is literally paying for detail that they can't even use. 1920 x 1080 makes sense for a 10" tablet, but it's wasted on anything less than 7 inches.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S III Will Sport a Full HD Display Discussion
I mostly agree with the comments above; but here's one possible counterargument: I suspect that 1080p would be the plateau (at least for a while), since there isn't much chance of true phones getting screens much bigger than 5 inches and content isn't going to benefit much from resolutions higher than 1080p. It certainly is a bit of a body blow to the HTC top-tier models.

It's all about the bragging rights: "My smartphone has more ridiculously advanced/unusable features than your smartphone." I'll take 2, please.

IMO, I think it will be just 1280 x 720, but the display will be Super AMOLED that is non Pentile. Its 40/60 now if the chip is the dual core Exynos 5250 with the A15 architecture vs. the quad core 4412 with the A9 architecture.

Meh, a mere FHD resolution, you'd be able to drive a bus through those huge pixels when you were looking at it under a microscope, why not go for WQSXGA and be done with it
Seriously though, people must have amazing eyesight to have even WVGA bother them with pixelated everything on such small screens, either that or great near vision where their nose is a permanent fixture against their screens.LG Nexus 4

Re: Samsung Galaxy S III Will Sport a Full HD Display Discussion
Yeah, but the thing is that content isn't going to benefit from 1080P either, on a phone sized screen.
If that's the case, I think it would be ideal. 1280 x 720, on a 4.8 inch screen, is just over that 300 DPI number, but not wastefully so. And a non-pentile SAMOLED is about as nice a screen quality as you can get, resolution aside.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S III Will Sport a Full HD Display Discussion
I too suspect that it might stay at 720p, that's what the original reports are; but I was responding to this post and what it might mean.
I don't entirely agree that 1080p doesn't mean anything. You probably would get something from having that kind of resolution; but it would be minimal. The real benefit might come from encoding 1080p video for use on the phone. And I'm seeing more and more 1080p content on places like Youtube every day. With such source material, the whole screen would be used, rather than seeing lower-res video inside of black borders.
