The GSMA and the Wireless Broadband Alliance are working on a plan to allow smartphones to easily and seamlessly roam between different Wi-Fi networks, even if these are managed by separate companies.

Ed, you speculated in a thread some months ago that mobile carriers would work out ways to offload data from their networks and onto WiFi networks in a manner that would be seamless from the customer's perspective. This sounds like this would make it easier for that to happen.

Yes jig, this was exactly the sort of thing I was anticipating. Mobile data use is growing an an explosive rate, and the wireless operators need to get customers off their cellular-wireless networks whenever they can. Wi-Fi is the logical alternative.

This would (will) be great if done right. I certainly would not have a problem with it all. I still have my Unlimited plan from AT&T. I would be willing to give it up IF a plan like this were done and done right. Also, if the TelCo would offer decent pricing on rate plans higher than 300MB. Maybe 500MB. I might be able to do 300MB but it would be close, and no I am not You-tubing or doing Netflix. It's all emails with attachments.

Of course it would also depend how much the WiFi plans were. Will they be as cheap as 3G Data? I'll need to be incentivized to give up my Unlimited plan. Make it Economically beneficial to me and I will. If not...why would I?

Free WiFi does seem to popping up everywhere lately. I even noticed a new 32 Degrees Yogurt Shop that just opened up here in Huntsville that was offering Free WiFi. Many fast food as well as smaller restaurants are doing this now and that's good IMHO.
