I agree. After the astoundingly poor battery life of my pPalm 755p, I was delighted to get multi-day battery life with my RIM 8830. When I switched to iPhone, I no longer got multi-day battery life but I got enough battery life that I never thought about a charger in the middle of the afternoon (like I did with the 755p). I was so delighted to finally have a respectable app selection that I didn't mind I was taking a step backward in battery life. So yes battery life is critical but the phone can't be a dog either. My BB 8830 had less free memory than my ancient Treo 650 used to have. This I lived with for a while but once I began carrying an iPod Touch as my main PDA, I realized I couldn't live with less than 32 MEG of internal storage any more. Even now I spend a bit of time tweaking to keep enough storage free in my 16 Gig iPhone so storage space is a big factor to me but I'll go ahead and demote storage space to a second tier in terms of satisfaction because I don't consider my usage to be typical. At over 400 apps, I doubt most people chew through storage the way I do.

I never have to think about stability with my iPhone like I did with my BB and my 755p. So I'd say there are 4 factors that are essential to smartphone satisfaction and they are roughly a tie: Stability, and Battery life come first followed closely by Storage space and App selection.

It seems like makers have gotten the picture too. The race to make a paper-thin phone seems to have ebbed. Bigger batteries please.

I hope you're right, V. As I like to say, it doesn't matter if a smartphone is the thinnest in the world with the biggest screen ever, once the battery runs out it's a paperweight.

p.s. Thought for the day: in another generation or so, I can see people asking, what the heck is a paperweight?

Third party vendors sell extended batteries that increase the bulk of the phone. Ordered from China, they can be pretty cheap. But it's hard to bulk up your phone once you see how thin and sleek it can be.
One nice feature of most phones is that they don't have to be paperweights when the battery dies: just pull off the back and pop in a fresh one!

Ed, I like the 'paperweight' comment.

Jig, auxiliary batterypacks are fine as far as they go; but they usually are bulky as you mentioned, because they're not well-shaped and have redundant hardware and casings. If the battery is well-designed into the phone, you're ahead of the game. But I do like the idea of changeable batteries, which the Maxx doesn't have.

The Maxx is what I would top most recommend right now among Verizon phones. Wish it has a GSM version. For GSM phones, I would recommend the Note. Though the Note has a smaller battery (2500mah still no slouch), that battery is replaceable unlike the Maxx.

Ya, the Note has amazing battery life, longest run time of anything I've owned before, the Maxx must be pretty impressive if you disable the 4g, having owned some real shockers over the years, most new devices seem pretty good comparatively.

I believe our thoughts run parallel there!

That's what I've done; my new Samsung Stratosphere features a 4000 mAh battery. Bulky? Sure, but not as much as you might think, and I can go three days without charging if I need to.

True, but personally I choose to go with one large battery instead of two or three small ones. For one thing, it's easier to keep track of your charge with one battery, you're never at a risk of walking out without it, etcetera.

Motorola has been good about releasing versions of their previous phones to the GSM market, minus the "Droid" designation, so I'd be surprised if the RAZR MAXX doesn't put out an appearance in a GSM version.
