Even absent the glitch; I never understood why I'd really want money 'stored' on my phone. I'd rather have it go through my credit card account, where I have buyer protection and fraud protection, etc.

I agree, both this and "contactless" payment systems like using NFC from a smartphone seem like solutions in search of problems. If I'm out and about carrying my phone, it's not likely that I'm going to be without my wallet and thus my card--which is more universal, easier to use, and less devastating to me if it gets lost or stolen.

Agreed, but this is true across the board in IT, amazing idea's and killer software is hard to come up with now, so software/hardware to fix non existent problems and changing things "just because it's new" is all the rage....Microsoft are in warp drive with this at the moment with Microsoft obsessive compulsive swipe to the right Tiles edition and Microsoft office idiot version 2, apple do it to a lesser extent but it is all of a sudden far more revolutionary when they do it, and Google want's to outdo MS at it but doesn't have as big a portfolio to mess around with yet.

Stay tuned for more lunacy coming from a software company near you

I think I was one of the first to try these NFC devices probably 20 yeas ago. Mobil Oil had a trial, which they later expanded, and gave you a little tag that you could attach to you keychain. You swiped it across the 'Pegasus' logo after you filled your tank, and it was linked to a credit card of your choice. It worked for years without a glitch; but I think it was discontinued when Mobil merged with Exxon.
