Merely the absence of the card slot alone, seriously hobbles the Nexus S IMO.

I tend to agree, and it's not something I want to see proliferate. But for a lot of less technically inclined people, it still serves relatively well.

Only the Proton 4G offers a mini HDMI connector. This is good news for business people and Teachers.

Mini HDMI plugs is the defacto way to connect to a television. I play my PSP on my television using a Sony approved plug and know we will need to use a real computer to play true high resolution stuff on HD Television.

The only problem with true HD viewing is once you are spoiled with True HD you hate to view Low Resolution television. I suppose only teachers and business people only use the HDMI pluggable cell phones.

Actually, I used one last night to play back a 720P resolution movie file on a flat-screen TV. Although they may be limited to the "system" resolution for most apps, recent phones support the ability to output at higher resolutions for some things, like video.

Most 'HD TV' is actually 720p not 1080p. Blu-ray is the primary source of 1080p video.

I would very much like my smartphone to have HDMI-out (or mini-HDMI out); but DLNA is becoming more and more common, which makes wireless transmission a real option.

The Nexus gets the updates quicker but small point updates to Gingerbread isn't going to outweigh the Photon's sheer hardware superiority. Plus when ICs starts getting ported to the phones, the Photon would be a nicer hardware to run it on while the Nexus S will be at a disadvantage.
