Arrow Motorola Droid RAZR Hands-On Preview: Slim but Powerful Discussion

UPDATE: This preview was written after a very short time with this device. An in-depth version based on very extensive testing is now available:

There are probably more retired Motorola RAZR feature phones littering junk drawers than any other mobile gadget. In fact, it's hard to overstate the ultrathin clamshell device's popularity between 2004 and 2007, when Motorola shipped 130 million of them.

It's no surprise then that Motorola would once again turn to the brand for its next flagship Android device, and its first major launch since news broke of a pending Google acquisition, the Motorola Droid RAZR. And being the nostalgic types, the team at Brighthand couldn't be happier.

Wow, 130 million Razr's, had no idea they sold so many

I'm finding just about everything too thin now, I would end up dropping this new model a lot

Was wondering how the Galaxy Nexus announcement made the Droid RAZR announcement, literally yesterday's.

There is something to be said about a heavier smartphone -- or at least a smartphone that isn't so light, it's impossible to tell if you are holding it or not. I don't know how I feel about smartphones that are so light, they register the twitch of a pulse.

Having both announcements on the same day must have been frustrating for Motorola. On the other hand, it scheduled this event after CTIA so it knew OS 4.0 would be unveiled before the OS 2.3-based Droid RAZR was on the market. And the company said today that an upgrade to Android OS 4.0 will be released in early 2012.

Well, I lost my whole post; but to summarize: We've already passed the point where thin and light is good. And I don't like the 'shelf' extension. I prefer a flat back, so use the space for more battery or something. And I like to have a bit more heft in the device like Jamison.

They're going to be bought out by Google anyway. so whatever their losses, will inevitably be Google to shoulder.

I see no problem upgrading the phone to Android 4.0. It has the same rough specs and processor as the Galaxy Nexus. It might end up being a little faster with the qHD having less a graphical overhead than the pure HD resolution. Just lacking the NFC for Android beaming and the buttons might end up being redundant, although it would be easy to re-express the capacitive buttons to the ICS equivalents.

If you like hefty but feels really smooth to the hand, try the two 3D phones, the LG Optimus 3D (AT&T Thrill) or the HTC EVO 3D.
