Default HTC Might Buy HP's webOS Discussion

HTC's Chairwoman says her company might purchase an operating system for its smartphones and tablets. The name at the top of the list is almost certainly webOS, which HP is shopping around.

"We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse."

In other words "We do not do things like HP does."

Wouldn't they be better off buying WebOS because it's a "name" OS instead of trying to sell the public on yet another system?

I think it would be. I know I've said this several times before, but the webOS is really well made. In some ways it's superior to Android and iOS. I know it didn't take off, but that's not because of problems with the OS.

HTC makes great devices. I think it could produce wonderful smartphones and tablets with the webOS.

The name of the OS is simply "webOS", not "the webOS". I know it is a minor issue, but this site has been making the mistake consistently and it really does grate, particularly on those of us that have been active in the webOS ecosystem.

I really like the thought, but I refuse to get my hopes up again. Well, maybe this once. HTC could make something really nice with WebOS. As long as they have the Sense to leave their own UI off it.

HTC was considering buying Palm before, back in 2009, but for the same reasons Huawei dropped out of the buying bid, they are not willing to pay for absorbing the huge backlog of unsold Pre inventory in the channels.

The word "ecosystem" being misused as much as it is grates some people as well

I like the thought as well, HTC's shells have been an identity for them since they started selling their own brand, while I'm not a huge fan of Sense, and definitely didn't like TF3D on winmo, I'm not against it either as long as they keep system resources being swallowed under control.

I think they realize they're on a road to nowhere with MSFT/Nokia and Google/Motorola, I hope it happens

I wonder what the HTC customers would say. HTC designs and manufactures many devices for many corporations. What would they think if a supplier is committed to an in-house OS while they order production runs of devices running other OSs?

h, I'll dig around to see if I can find out how many smartphones HTC makes for other companies these days. Yes, it was once one of the world's largest OEMs, but when it started releasing smartphones under its own brand name, and doing really well at it, many rival device makers switched to other OEMs. Makes sense: you don't want one of your top competitors controlling the production of your products.

The only company I know of off the top of my head who still puts its own brand on devices produced by HTC is T-Mobile.
