Arrow Dropbox for iPhone Review: Multimedia Storage in the Cloud Discussion

Dropbox is one of a number of companies now offering cloud-based storage space to desktop, laptop and mobile device users for a variety of file sharing, backup and collaborative tasks. After using Dropbox on my desktop PC for a while, I put the iPhone app to an informal test. Although the mobile app performed well here and there, full-fledged functionality still awaits.

I've been using Dropbox for my Android devices since I got my first one, and it's great. For small files, it's faster and easier than Bluetooth.

Yup, another big fan of Dropbox (on Android here). Couldn't live without it. Surprised the iOS version doesn't let you do local transfer to the local file system. Well, maybe not surprised as I'm betting the decision has more to do with what iOS will allow than DropBox leaving out the feature.

LG Nexus 4: AT&T (Gophone), Android 4.4.2, stock and unrooted-- and probably staying that way.

Well that is partially true Hook. iOS still doesnot have a local/native file system but DropBox does allow you to open a file that is within DropBox in D2G or others. Then you can file it within D2G or whatever. About one more step than normal but that's about it.

Nice that DTG on iOS integrates with Dropbox. On Android, they chose Google Docs, so I use QuickOffice which has Dropbox integration.

I use dropbox as well. Moved some of my MobileMe stuff there in anticipation of deletion of my MobileMe account.

I'm not a user; but it seems to me that 2 GB is hardly worth the effort (for a free account); and the prices for other accounts pile up quickly. Why wouldn't one of the new personal cloud-storage devices not be better?

I rarely come close to filling it up. The point isn't to use it as permanent storage but as a kind of USB stick accessible from any device anywhere. The free account is a perfect size, in my opinion.

And it is so much more seamless than yet another physical device or sd card. I snap a pic on my Nexus one, it uploads to Dropbox and is waiting for me to edit it on my computer at home.

I have a few rough drafts I want to review on my commute. Drop them in DropBox on my computer. They are waiting for me when I pull my phone out on the train (I do have to download first-- sync is manual out of concern for unwanted data charges).

It is simple and it just works.
