Default Apple's Super Low-Cost Smartphone Could be the iPhone 3GS Discussion

There have been widely-reported but unconfirmed reports that Apple is going to offer a very inexpensive iPhone targeting the pre-paid market this fall. A supposedly reliable source indicates that the company is going to pull this off by keeping around a model that's two years old.

Well, I'll be. The marketing geniuses at Apple are at least as smart as Brighthanders. I believe we here concluded that this was the way to go some time back.

It seems like a lost opportunity for Apple. Why go that far back? Use the iP4, and introduce it when the iP5 comes out.

i phone 3GS still beats 90% of all prepaid phones....thats why they are using that. iphone 4 is still really expansive and most prepaid planes feature cheap phones

Diff. b/t the 3GS and 4 is probably quite minimal, especially a year later.

That's the thing. Prepaid phones are bought outright, often by people who don't have a lot of money in the first place or are just plain looking for a bargain. Even an older-gen iPhone will be mondo-capable to people who've probably never owned a smartphone before.

I may think about getting one for my son to use as a gophone if it actually comes to pass. He uses a texting gophone now. If he uses too much data, well, he just has no data. ;-D

That actually can work out pretty well. For example, I save on data by sms-ing my brother to his gmail account, rather than a text. I've got a big text bucket but limited data. He has unlimited data on his Droid but didn't buy a text package in order to save money.

If your son has frequent access to wifi, he will have no problems.
