Well, I'll be. The marketing geniuses at Apple are at least as smart as Brighthanders. I believe we here concluded that this was the way to go some time back.

It seems like a lost opportunity for Apple. Why go that far back? Use the iP4, and introduce it when the iP5 comes out.

Diff. b/t the 3GS and 4 is probably quite minimal, especially a year later.

I may think about getting one for my son to use as a gophone if it actually comes to pass. He uses a texting gophone now. If he uses too much data, well, he just has no data. ;-D

Google (ASUS) Nexus 7, wifi+data (AT&T), Android 4.2.2, stock and un-rooted (so far
)
LG Nexus 4: AT&T (Gophone), Android 4.4.2, stock and unrooted-- and probably staying that way.

That actually can work out pretty well. For example, I save on data by sms-ing my brother to his gmail account, rather than a text. I've got a big text bucket but limited data. He has unlimited data on his Droid but didn't buy a text package in order to save money.
If your son has frequent access to wifi, he will have no problems.
