Default Android OS 2.3.3 Coming to Samsung Nexus S Bringing NFC Support Discussion

Google is releasing an Android OS 2.3.3 update to the Samsung Nexus S, and with it comes a special new feature: near field communications. A still-emerging technology, NFC is expected to make it easier for phones to send and receive short-range transmissions.

People with an S might want to know about this also:
No Facebook Sync for Nexus S Anymore - www.enterprisemobiletoday.com

Sorry. Now that I reread the article, it appears that this is OT. I originally thought this was related to the OS upgrade but it appears to be an action taken by FB itself. Still probably important info for Nexus S & Facebook users. I note further that FB will continue this policy for its app for future-issued phones, presumably of whatever type.

NFC reminds me a bit of what Bluetooth was going to be at one point: a simple way to wirelessly exchange data between two devices.

However, people became so worried about the potential security risks of Bluetooth that the linking up process was made more secure, to the point where pairing two devices became a hassle. It stopped being something you did on the fly.

I suspect the same sort of think is going to happen with NFC. Once we read a few dozen articles about worms and viruses being spread by NFC it'll be made more secure to the point where you'll have to log in to send or receive anything.

Never mind, my middle name is off topic , as a potential Nexus S owner I would fully expect Facebook to be the first thing removed on one I bought anyway

Interesting comment, and very true of bluetooth, I don't even bother ordering my notebooks with BT anymore because it became a hassle, although I admit to not even having tried it for quite a few models of pocket devices.
Will be interesting to see if NFC does end up with the same problem, logic would probably agree with you, any vulnerability is usually exploited, if only, because it can be.

It appears Google bent backwards and built a backdoor to allow Facebook to sync to the contacts, and Facebook hasn't reciprocated in kind. Does it matter? Probably not since Facebook can go through the official APIs for this now, like everyone else.

The Nexus S accounts for a small fraction of Android phones. The far more numerous Androids with Touchwiz, HTC Sense, and Motoblur all got their own Facebook contact syncs.

This thing is going to matter most with mobile payments aka mobile wallets. In Japan, this isn't experimental. NFC with mobile payments is widely used.

For me at least, neither matters, as I have no use for either at this point.

Apparently a change in colour warmth is a by product of this update, supposedly to make darker colours more accurate, looks to me like the theory failed badly....post update on the right.

Right now, the Nexus S has this greenish to bluish tint on it. I like to see what happens with the update with my own eyes.
