HTC HD2 Coming to T-Mobile USA this Spring

HTC has promised the HTC HD2 will be released in the U.S. early next year, but hasn't revealed which wireless carrier(s) will be offering it. Nevertheless, numerous leaks and unconfirmed reports indicate that T-Mobile USA will be getting this very high-end Windows phone.

The latest bit of evidence is a leaked ROM that is supposedly for this carrier's version of the HD2. This contains quite a number of system apps with the prefix TMOUS -- short for T-Mobile USA.

Previously, an early version of one of the advertisements for this smartphone leaked out, with T-Mobile's logo emblazoned on it.

There has been no word of any other U.S. carrier offering this HTC model.

The HD2 is already available in Europe and Asia, but supposedly won't debut in the United States until March.

An Overview of the HTC HD2
The HD2 (AKA the HTC Leo) is one of the first devices on the market with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro, but it has the new version of HTC's custom user interface layered on top. This used to be called TouchFLO, but has just been renamed HTC Sense to reflect a greater focus on consumers.

It lacks a hardware keyboard, but that's just about the only feature it doesn't have.

The HTC HD2 is the first Windows Mobile smartphone with a capacitive display that supports multi-touch, so users can resize websites, Microsoft Office files, PDF documents and pictures easier with a pinch of their fingers.

This 4.3-inch display is the largest yet on a smartphone running Microsoft's OS, and has a WVGA (800x480) resolution.

Naturally, the HD2 has mobile broadband (7.2 Mbps HSDPA), plus it includes Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.1. It is even be able to act as a Wi-Fi router for another computer.

It also includes a whopping 448 MB of RAM, a 5 MPx camera with auto-focus, a microSD card reader, GPS receiver, 1,230 mAh battery, and a 3.5 mm headset jack.

This HTC device comes with Windows Mobile's standard collection of mobile apps: Outlook, Office, Media Player. Opera Mobile is the default web browser.

I have to admit, even without a keyboard, if the T-Mobile no contract price is right, I will at least consider this as a possible upgrade even with my desire to stay with Symbian. Of course, it will also depend on the Brighthand review.

I still really want to hold out for something like the HD2 with a real keyboard; but this is tempting. I read in another thread though that the HD2 doesn't have built-in GPS. I know they've packed a lot into this phone; but isn't skipping the GPS a foolish decision?

Everything I've seen here, including post #1 in this thread, says it does have GPS.

I'd be more surprised if the HD2 DOESN'T have GPS given that it's one of those everything-and-the-kitchen-sink devices...but in that case, you can always get a Bluetooth GPS receiver.

In any case, I'd probably like to see it come to T-Mobile most seeing as they're the one major US carrier that seems to irritate me the least, and could end up with my cell phone subscription money a few years from now (unless things drastically change by then).

The European and Asian versions of this phone definitely have a GPS receiver, according to the official specifications:

I'd be very surprised, shocked even, if T-Mobile stripped it out.

I was pretty specific in mentioning it was ANOTHER thread where someone said something about the HD2 not having GPS. I thought it did; but wasn't making a definitive statement either way, since I hadn't seen one in the 'flesh.'

T-Mobile USA has just made it official: it will be launching the HTC HD2 this spring. And it will be the exclusive US provider of this smartphone.
