Motorola Droid May Soon Get a System Software Update

Verizon Wireless and Motorola are reportedly working on an update for the system software on the Motorola Droid that will fix a number of small bugs. A similar software update for the HTC Droid Eris is also coming soon.

Documents describing the known bugs in these two Android-based smartphones have leaked out of Verizon.

Most of the issues with the Motorola Droid are more irritating than severe. Many of them relate to its messaging software. For example, Exchange ActiveSync currently can't download attachments larger than 10 GB, and Yahoo's e-mail service is not supported.

Droid Eris' Bugs
As for the HTC Droid Eris, some of its problems are minor, but not all.

Its signal-strength icon will sometime turn grey for no apparent reason while the device is on a call. Also, the user either needs to unmount the microSD card before removing it, or turn the device off when switching cards. There's also a DST problem.

Possibly its most serious bug is one that causes the Droid Eris to get stuck in 2.5G service and not switch to faster 3G service. In addition, users should not use the app on the device that performs a factory reset.

The SMS texting app on both the Droid and Droid Eris does not show how many characters have been entered until this has passed 160. And neither device can send a contact over a Bluetooth connection.

Updates on the Way
The leaked documents describing these bugs promise that software updates to correct virtually all of them will be released on Dec. 11. However, a few will have to wait until the update after that, on January 22.

Its not known if any new features will be added while these issues are being fixed.

These updates for the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris are expected to be pushed out to these smartphone over the air, so the user will have to do little or nothing to download and install them.

I'm not going to re-create Verizon's work, but I checked and the SMS app on the Droid doesn't show a character count until I've entered more than 160, which is kind of irritating.

Another bug that I hope will be fixed is that this device can't be charged while shut down. Plugging it in always turns it on. It can be "asleep" and charging, but not totally turned off.
