Default Dell Android-Based Smartphone May Be Coming to America

Michael Dell has left open the possibility that his company might release an Android-based phone outside of China next year. This has raised the hopes of those who would like to see this company enter the U.S. smartphone market.

Dell mini3iThe Dell mini 3i that was released by China Mobile is an entry-level device that lacks both 3G and Wi-Fi. It runs Android but uses a custom user interface created by its carrier (see image at left).

It has a 3.5-inch, 360-by-640 touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, and a memory card slot.

    Coming to America
When the CEO of Dell was asked recently if his company will release a phone outside of China, his answer was somewhat equivocal: "Maybe next year."

There have been unconfirmed reports that AT&T will release a "Dellphone" in 2010. It's not clear if this will be a version of the mini 3i or a new model.
