T-Mobile G1 Now Available for Under $100
Amazon.com is now offering the T-Mobile G1 at a special price -- just over half what this Android-based smartphone normally sells for.
The regular price for the G1 is $180 when purchased with a two-year contract, but this online retailer is selling it now for $98. However, getting this price requires signing up for a new service contract, so this deal is not available to current T-Mobile customers. To learn more, visit Amazon's website.
More About the T-Mobile G1
The T-Mobile G1 is a consumer-oriented smartphone with support for this carrier's new 3G network.
It includes an 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen, a QWERTY keyboard, GPS, and Wi-Fi. It also sports a microSD card slot and a 3.2 megapixel camera.
What makes the G1 special though isn't the hardware, but that it's the first device running an operating system that was developed primarily by Google. It has a highly-functional web browser, and includes tie-ins to a number of this company's online services, like Gmail and Google Maps. There is also a rapidly growing collection of third-party software available.
The G1 is also available now on T-Mobile USA's website, as well as stores, but at the regular price. It can also be purchased in many Wal-Mart stores for $150.

Re: T-Mobile G1 Now Available for Under $100
Have there been any sales figures for the G1? I've only seen one out in the wild, so I don't expect it to be doing that well just from personal observation. This price drop is probably more evidence of that.

Re: T-Mobile G1 Now Available for Under $100
Agreed, why would they drop the price so low if it's selling well? Or maybe they're about to announce the G2, hopefully with an 8 MP camera with flash, video player/recorder, a standard stereo headphone jack, and longer battery life. A Skype client would be nice, too.
As soon as such a device appears, I'm migrating my trusty old Palm T3's databases and moving into the new era. I can't wait. The T3 was so well designed that I'm still happy with its functionality, but to have a single phone-PDA-camera-multimedia-GPS-browser-email device, oh joy!
(And what is it with cell phones and headphone jacks, anyway? This technology must be at least 50 years old. Is it really that hard?)Palm III, IIIxe, Handera 330, Tungsten T, T3, N1

Re: T-Mobile G1 Now Available for Under $100
I dont suppose you can sign up for a prepaid plan and get it for $100 can you?
The walmart version... is it with or without contract?
AFAIK this is one of only 4 phones (iirc the other 3 are dumbphones too) to use Tmo's 3G network, and at $1/day for data @ 3G speeds, that's not a bad deal..."Thank you for helping us, help you, help us all" - GLaDOS, PORTAL

Re: T-Mobile G1 Now Available for Under $100
I have to think that this huge, global economic crisis that we're in the middle of is playing a part.
At the same time, Android feels a bit unfinished and the G1 is a very non-sexy device, so I doubt it's selling as well as some might hope.
Many people are expecting T-Mobile USA to release the HTC Magic at next month's CTIA tradeshow as the T-Mobile G2. The Magic is very similar to the G1, but without the sliding keyboard.

Re: T-Mobile G1 Now Available for Under $100
I agree, but as your recent article shows, a lot of companies are thriving at the expense of Nokia. Apple and RIM are growing at a break-neck pace, and I think a lot of this has to do with the carrier choice. The iPhone can get away with AT&T, and the Storm can get away with Verizon (even given the device's problems). But Android cannot thrive on T-Mobile, and neither can Palm on Sprint. Unfortunately, in the U.S., carrier is almost everything.
I honestly think it's easier to convince a Verizon customer to switch to AT&T to get the iPhone than it is to convince that same customer to switch to Sprint to get the Pre. I think the G1 is a good example of the struggle Palm may face before they get a chance to re-establish themselves.

Re: T-Mobile G1 Now Available for Under $100
I ask again, can these be used on the $1/day prepaid plans, and can I use that plan to get one for $100 or $150?
