Adobe Flash Player Coming To a Broad Array of Mobile Devices
Adobe said this week it is working with ARM to bring Flash Player 10 to devices running processors based on ARM designs. This includes smartphones running some of the best-known mobile operating systems, but not the iPhone.
At its annual MAX conference, Adobe's Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch demoed an early version of the Flash Player on devices running Windows Mobile, Android, and Symbian S60.
"Video created for the Adobe Flash Player is the leading video format on the web today, and this collaboration with ARM is another important step towards bringing the complete web experience to mobile devices worldwide," said Gary Kovacs, general manager and vice president, Mobile and Devices at Adobe.
A version of Flash Player 10 optimized for ARM-based smartphones, MIDs, and other products is expected to be available in the second half of 2009.
No iPhone Support
Lynch was not able to demonstrate Flash Player on a iPhone, because Apple is blocking Adobe from releasing a version of this application for its smartphone. Because the iPhone is a closed system, Adobe would need Apple's participation.
Flash is more than just a way to play streaming video and moving advertisements, it can be used to run whole applications. Apple is resisting anything that will enable the iPhone to run software it hasn't approved.

... Not for Palm OS any time soon, right?

Palm OS is going to be dead soon, unfortunately. Clean, streamlined, and 6 years old. Unfortunate, indeed. As for the iPhone, the lack of Flash and Java support, as well as the lack of copy and paste, holds it back from being truly universally useful.

Second half of 2009, eh? Wouldn't it be interesting if one of the first OS to actually run flash was Nova! (It's still OK to dream, right?)

Re: Adobe Flash Player Coming To a Broad Array of Mobile Devices
At this point, very few mobile devices have a signifiant need for Flash outside of multimedia. For Adobe to be taking about another half year might mean that FL4's and F10's codecs are more aligned and much less memory hungry. Will be interesting, but outside of the Sony Mylo COM-2, I've not seen one mobile device make Flash just work quickly and simply.

Re: Adobe Flash Player Coming To a Broad Array of Mobile Devices
Flash is GREAT !!! As of now, with Opera Mobile 9.5 and Flash 3.1, the only site I am able to play flash media on my X7510 is youtube.
I sure hope when they release their version it will encompass most web sites.Christian
