Default Raon Everun UMPC Promises Long Battery Life, Low Cost

Raon Digital has announced the Everun, a Windows XP UMPC with a built-in keyboard. This device will have several features that have piqued the interest of small computer fans.

One of these is its size. The Everun will have a tablet design, and be just 6.7 inches long, 3.3 inches wide, and 0.9 inches thick (17 by 8.3 by 2.5 cm) and weigh about 1.1 pounds (500 g).

Another feature attracting attention is battery life.  Raon says this UMPC will run up to 7 hours on its standard battery or 12 hours on its enhanced battery.

And finally there's price. It seems the Everun will be officially released only in Korea, but U.S. gray-market retailer Dynamism is promising to sell it for under $900.

An Overview of the Raon Everun

This UMPC will run Windows XP Home Edition on a 600 MHz AMD Geode LX 900 processor, and will include at least 512 MB of RAM.

To save power, the Everun will be available with a 6 GB solid state hard drive. It will also be sold with a 60 GB standard hard drive instead, and a version with both will be available.

As mentioned earlier, this PC will have a tablet shape, with a small QWERTY keyboard next to its 4.8-inch, 800-by-480 touchscreen.

The Everrun will include integrated Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) and Bluetooth 2.0.  Raon also mentions 3G cellular-wireless networking as an option item.

This UMPC will offer a USB and a miniUSB port, and a docking station will include an Ethernet port.

Good idea I guess, but WInXP and Vista both hate anything less than 800x600. And I don't mean because they cannot, but because simple diaogue boxes tend to "want" that kind of resolution.

Also looks a lot heavy. But eh, its neat.

Yeah, not to mention it is one of the few devices to follow under the Project Origami promise.

I wish Vista was an option but with the specs & price combined I find myself unable to complian, there is nothing better in the end.
This has to be my favorite device of 2007, finally I don't have to debate price between a Tablet PC and a Ultraportable when considering purchase as the price is well below their range as it (all UMPCs) should have been from day 1.

Really, they got it right, Not perfect but right. I may replace my X51v with this and give the X51v to my cousin.

I'm sure the long battery life is quoted with the 6 gigs of flash. Let's see. What would make me want a Win XP based light-weight laptop replacement for the road?

At this point, I really should explain that my desktop hasn't been switched on in 9 months and my laptop has become my desktop and now I'm looking for a lighter weight device to carry along that allows me to do real work with some limitations...

1 - minus - adobe photoshop. o well. it's a non starter on this device
2 - plus - office docs and the ability to edit them natively using genuine ms office. could be done on this device
3 - plus - "genuine ie" for those web sites designed by dolts who cannot take the time to validate the sites with anything other than ie.
4 - minus - ability to run my existing crop of windows software. not very good when the device comes with only 6 gig. i would be facing the same kind of memory constraints i am feeling on my treo 650. i would be running windows apps from sd card 'cause they wouldn't fit in the c: partition.
5 - minus - ability to wipe the os and install linux. wait a second. would this take some cost away from the device? shouldn't it be offered this way? can it be set up to boot from a usb cd? maybe not! how about linux drivers for the chipsets used in this device? maybe not!
6 - minus - shouldn't it be offered in the us and not just grey market?

The Raon Everrun UMPC is definitely worth my consideration when I focus on the point that the biggest source of pain with my current laptop is weight. I wonder how bulky the charger is?

Last night I stopped by microcenter to pick up a light weight hub. I carry a hub around in my laptop bag and have been lugging a small 10/100 hub which comes with a power brick that weighs almost as much as my laptop. I found a "trend net" in a small box that was the lightest one on display. I was happy when I opened the box to find that the brick weighs even less than the charger for my Treo 650! My laptop bag was cutting into my shoulder a lot less on the way to the office this morning!

It's time for the reviewers to dump all the peripherals that are necessary to travel with a device on the scale with the device and report the total luggage, not just the weight of the device. This would kill Dell since they bundle heavy external optical drives with their lightweight notebooks. In fact this criteria would kill most laptops because their power supply bricks are almost always about as heavy as a Buick.

Awesome points, especially about IE validation.

About the accessories weight for reviewing a device, you make a good point. That is something that many handheld devices have an issue of until you start talking about cradles and battery extenders, but is something that should be noted.
