Default Palm Releases Fairly Significant Update for Verizon Treo 650

The U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless has introduced a fairly significant update to its version of the Palm Treo 650.

According Palm, the enhancements in this include:

    • Enhanced memory handling for opening larger web pages
    • Optimized Bluetooth performance and added support for additional headsets and carkits
    • Adds Dial Preferences screen to Phone Application
    • Enhancement to Date/Time preference panel to address daylight savings time and network time issues
    • Replaces Wireless Sync application with Wireless Sync over-the-air provisioning client
    • Adds support for certain cradle-based accessories, including speaker docks
    • Integrates the Treo 650 E911 Updater to improve the ability of emergency response personnel to locate users who dial 911 from the Treo 650 smartphone

For more information, or to download this ROM update, visit the Palm web site.

In addition, those who regularly use VersaMail on this smartphone will have to upgrade this email application after installing Treo 650 Updater 1.05a. It can be downloaded from this web site.

Thanks for letting us know about this Ed, but one should approach this update with caution as it is not entirely foolproof. Well, it's not entirely r0kproof

I tried this update specifically because it was fairly significant. I didn't fare well, as is discussed in another thread. Verizon is sending me another phone after the update left my phone unusable. After ordering the new phone, I found a copy of 1.04 (the previous update) lying around my pc and installed it. I got my phone back. Whew!

I really want 1.05 to work. Before all of this I had been using 1.03 which I found to be very stable but there were a few quirks I was hoping 1.04 and now 1.05 might address. With 1.04, my phone is noticeably slower than with 1.03. I've heard 1.05 is faster so I'm looking forward to getting speed AND the fixes I need.

It's too late to cancel the replacement phone so if it comes pre-loaded with 1.05 I will keep it and send my phone back . If it comes with anything older, I will try the update again. I want the enhanced bluetooth handsfree support and the better browser and versamail performance of 1.05.

There is a significant difference in the approach with 1.05's installshield versus it's predecessor, 1.04. 1.04 loaded itself entirely in your Treo 650's internal memory, ran in one step and finished in very little time. While I believe 1.04 was compatible with sd card backups I had lying around, I opted to use hotsync to do my restore just to play it safe.

1.05 tries to do things piecemeal and if one step fails, you would do well to have another rom image to put back on your phone. The first step is an update to your phone's E911 feature and this is the step where my phone took a dive. 1.05's installshield tries to make everything seamless. It does your last hotsync, then it puts the update on your phone, then it applies the update. If all goes well it hard resets your phone and even restores all your data, automatically replacing a handful of incompatible apps like older versions of docs 2 go. It is capable of recovering from the most common errors, but since it does so much handholding, you can't kill the install and resume it at will. You need to follow the script to get through to the end.

1.05 will orphan all your sd card backups so you must rely on hotsync to get your data back on your phone. It might be a good idea to let sysinfo turn on every backup bit before you do that last hotsync just to make sure everything really comes back. Don't forget. You will need a proper hotsync to get things back after installing 1.05.

You may want to look at the instructions for updating on a Macintosh computer. I just went thru them, it seems like a bit more of a hands-on approach, but bascically they let you download the 1.05 update as a zip archive which contains about 37 .PDB and .PRC files. Hard reset the phone, then copy these to the internal memory, the phone will reset and run all the updates at one shot.

A word of caution on this update... looks like it renders Shadowmite's DUN hack unusable, so if you use this you may want to think twice about applying this patch. If anyone had different results regarding the DUN hack, please let me know!

    Welcome to Brighthand, Dolomite!

DARN! I started to grab the mac version, but when I saw that the pc version was also a zip I picked it. When the only thing inside the zip was an exe file, I was pissed but I stupidly assumed the same would be true for the mac version. I wish I had grabbed the mac version first! I'm off to grab it now so I can try the update again with all that nuisance "automation". Thanks for pointing this out, Dolomite!!!

I attempted to perform the update. It cooked my Treo and I had to enlist VZW fora replacement. I wish I had visited this site to learn about the problems with this update. Palm should test their updates before publishing them so individuals who depend on their Treo's like I do don't have to feel naked after loosing them to a update that can stay an update if you ask me.

Has anyone else noticed that the LED stays solid green after a call is ended?
This only started happening about the same time I updated.

(Belated) Welcome to Brighthand, Cdiperri! Sorry to hear you had trouble. I also got a replacement phone but opted to return it because it had a camera. I'm not supposed to have a camera phone at work.

I have not noticed this. I notice that my led goes solid red at times for no apparent reason. I think I'll delete 4cast and hope this behavior stops. I didn't pick up on any different LED behavior after the update.
