Arrow RumorMill?: No Palm OS Cobalt Devices Expected Until Summer

According to a report from someone attending the CeBIT tradeshow, neither palmOne nor Sony are going to release a handheld with the next version of the Palm OS for several months.

    Question

If PPC pumps out a bunch of VGA-screened units, who will be left to care about Cobalt?

Default But here in the real world, Mike

Those VGA models are crippled the same way the original PPCs were in their battle with Palm OS models. They are all over $500, while Palms most desirable consumer models are hardly every selling for more than $350-400. It is down where the real market is that Palm is losing market share. That is also where I hope the new Cobalts arrive. When OS 5 came out the Zire and TE were right there at consumer prices below $200.

Now, if we see VGA screens on HP 1900s selling for $200 before Cobalt models arrive it could really have an impact. I far and away prefer the Palm OS, but right now the PPCs are just a lot more hardware for the money...that is except for my new Zire 71 that Sears sold me on closeout for $118 after rebate. As cumbersome as I find the SSS, I think it might tide me over until Cobalt models are out in the -$200 price range with a full feature set.

Having said all that the latest Asus 730's feature set is stunning, simply stunning.

If they are mostly 3.7 - 3.8 inch screens, then I believe they will have a hard time selling. 4 inch VGA is problematic enough.
