FCC Approves iPAQ h4155

The Federal Communications Commission has given Hewlett-Packard permission to release a new iPAQ in the U.S. This will be a slim and light model that will still offer both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Just a slight correction Ed - I was having a look through all the material and the FCC approval says it covers the 41xx AND the 43xx - presumably they must be the same as regards wireless stuff...

WOW, the h43xx is going to be long! Considering the tepid response the Hitachi G1000 has received for its thumbboard design, I wonder how the h4355 will do...

Duncan and I have looked and apparently the document he saw that mentioned the h4355 has been removed from the FCC site. At this point, it looks like only the h4155 has FCC approval.

The dimensions of the 4300 is 5.46" high x 2.94" wide x 0.57" thick and 5.82 oz. The Zodiac will be 5.6" high x 3.1" x 0.55" thick and 6.3 oz. The Hitachi G1000 is 5.8" high x 3.3" wide x 0.9" thick and 8.4 oz. That's considerably larger/heavier.

Still, because of the top-heaviness of holding a PDA this way to thumb-type, it will probably feel pretty akward. MS needs to get landscape support working so that one of their PPC licensees can do the thumbboard right. Of course, someone could adopt Sony's older design and have the screen and thumbboard on two separate pieces, which would give you a better grip.

Oh man, oh man, oh man. I haven't felt like this since I ordered a Jornada 548. The 4155 is my dream-PDA! Wifi's always been a pipe-dream until now. Now I can get everything I ever wanted in a Palm V-sized Pocket PC for $450. I never would have predicted that before.

I remember years ago in PDABuzz, some newbie would go, "I wan t BT+WIFI and dual slotzors wit cassiopeea screens in the sise of a Palm 5 !!!11!!" And the traditional response was, "Can you get a microwave oven with that, too?"

Right, and I mentioned that in the article. But there's nothing on the FCC site to say that it has given its approval for the the release of the h4355. The manual covers both devices because HP only wrote one manual for the entire h4000 series.
