Windows Vista wasn't around all that long and it certainly wasn't popular. Yet new software debuting years after Windows 7 replaced Windows Vista (such as Mass Effect III, released this month) don't require Windows 7 to run. They're backward compatible with Vista. The OS system requirements for the game are: "Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1, Windows 7." Not just Windows 7.

I am very, very confident that essentially all apps released in the year or so after Windows Phone 8 drops will be backwards-compatible with Mango.
