After years of using a Palm device, I've just switched to a Samsung BlackJack with WM5 Smartphone Edition. So I'm now in the process of figuring out how to adapt my Palm-based habits to this new environment.

I have not been able to find a clear answer to the question of what gets backed up by ActiveSync. I do not have Outlook, so I am not synchronizing e-mail, contacts, calendar, or tasks. (Actually, I am synchronizing my calendar with Lotus Notes using Lotus EasySync, but that's a separate issue.)

What I'm mainly concerned about at the moment is whether notes created with Notepad get backed up. I frequently used my Palm to jot quick notes, and sometimes to write more substantial text. If I use the Notepad application on the BlackJack, do the notes I create get backed up even if I don't have Outlook on the desktop?

And a related question: suppose I want to capture the text of a note and move it to a file on my desktop machine? Are these notes stored somewhere as text files, or in some format I can get at? I don't see any easy way to export text from Notepad, other than sending it via text message.

Of course I'm also interested in backing up other kinds of files on the device (e-books, photos, applications, etc.), but I'm trying to take this one step at a time. Any advice would be appreciated.
